Another aproach to spotters

Postby Avicena » Sun 21 Apr, 2013 6:11 pm

Hi! I' ve been following this mod and I've been watching comments of the main casters for quite some time.

I love the lore of WH40K and I was thinking a change it could be done lore-wise that doesn't change balance at all (I'm not well versed on the metagame to suggest any balance change xD).

I think spotters are not as important to the lore as maybe psykers (since they are required to maintain the emperor alive for example... pretty important to mankind xD). So I was thinking it could be good to change the spotters for psykers; the same function (hard counter to set-up teams)... same abilities and upgrades but with a psyker touch.

Generally modeling is the biggest difficulty for introducing new units so it would be required to "recycle" some other (I could not imagine the work that was needed to create a new faction such grey knights). Maybe heretics could be used like a base model.

I was reading a little bit through the posts and I've noticed that people talked about a melee unit for IG in T1... Maybe, with an upgrade they could loose their ranged abilities and become a melee counter (low dps but good disruption). This last thing i think is unnecesary xD. As Caeltos said IG has plenty of melee counters, subtle but plenty.

Another think is that the names of "requisition" and "power" doesn't fit for some races; so the could be changed depending on the race (pretty much as "red" is). They are good names for "human" races but maybe it could be changed for tyranids, orks and eldars.

Well! That's all! Thank you for your time!

PD: Forgive any grammar or spelling mistakes, my English is really rusty =D

Wait so you want a psyker calling down smoke-mortars and the fire ones ?

I think he was pointing at smoke = Nightshroud
Mortar = Lightning arc
incendiary shell = Warp Storm

Lightning Arc - Bolts of Warp lightning are launched from their hands

Machine Curse - The psyker places a curse on a target vehicle's machine spirit, potentially causing the machine to harm itself.

Nightshroud - The psyker reaches into his enemies' minds, obscuring himself and his companions from their sight.

Psychic Lash - A directed bolt of Warp energy, ignoring armor to rip open the enemy's organs.

Psychic Ward - Creates wards around the Psyker or nearby units to protect them against psychic attack.

Soul Storm - Favored by Psyker Battle Squads, this power engulfs the enemy in Warp energy to sear their flesh and rip their souls from their bodies.

Telepathic Order - Relays the commanding officer's orders via telepathy.

Weaken Resolve - Favored by Psyker Battle Squads, the pyskers evoke irrational terror in their enemies' minds.

Ps. I much would like this change, spotters -> Psykers. They could be squishy but they could be upgraded to be a force to be reckoned with. But perhaps it is better to have the spotters there and add the psyker as alternative choice.

Thanks for your responses!

I was just suggesting a change to the spotters skin and abilities (adding something else could not be balanced, I don't know...). But, as Yarrick said, I also think that having the spotters the way they are and adding psykers with another function would be cool (I leave that suggestion to people that actually know to play the game xD)

this actually would be interesting :)

sanctioned psykers are quite common sight in bigger IG operations, especially sector wide ones ^^ As for the animations and stuff, they could borrow the eldar or sorcerer animations. Like the Farseers warp storm is a good start :3 Or the immolate of the Warlock (tho in this case the unit casting animation would be quite off ^^; since its not an eldar wielding a sword :D)

and it would be nice to see it on the field with wierdboy, zoanthrope, librarians and whatnot walking around x) IG needs some love :D

at the risk of being terribly dull it really appears than certain frequent posters do not read threads or comments from modders and thereby confuse & get many people's hopes up.

I am pretty damn sure (Caeltos even says it in the recent interview with Rupee) that new units such as Psykers etc will & cannot be made as there are no models etc made for them.

Lulgrim also posted something to this effect along with a note that a chaos unit ( i forget which he said) might be added as the model is already made but others cant & "shut up". viewtopic.php?f=2&t=80&p=1226#p1226

If you want new models / units find people / learn how yourself to make them.

I am as I am sure the modders and many others too are tired of reading people writing about all these units that should be implemented when the simply do not exist! :D

As an IG player i would LOVE a psyker or even better a Vindicare assassin but i do not go on about it for the above stated reasons.

Random thought. How about giving them a sniper upgrade.

The psyker should be sub commander in my opinion.

There is a model for it, it's abit so-so in terms of quality, but I suppose that's just my subjective opinion on it. :-)

Don't assume I'll implement it. It's been brought up numerous times, but I haven't given the unit alot of thought, so that's a process that's going to take a while before I actually consider implementing it.

Like I've mentioned. The overall utility of the unit needs to blend in with the existing matchups and find a suitable spot for a certain build, without breaking the balance of certain matchups, as long as there is a existing counter to it within each respective matchup, that's when the process of evaluating the unit statistics and whole-arc performance can be done.
