I did play one game with Don Chikkonka (or however you spell his name) where he fielded the warboss, and I felt that the mines did play a much better role in t1-t2. In t1 it pretty much nullified his capping sluggas altogether, where I could pretty much just leave 1 shotgun scout squad on guard duty at a vp and as soon as the sluggas ran over they would get bombed by the mine and my scouts could force them off.
it did work well in t2 when I managed to lure his truck into a mine that snared it and allowed my dread to lay the final smackdown on it.
Although towards the end it felt that it pretty much played no role in the bigger battles as the shootas were always on site ready to shoot up my mines, and between my techmarine taking care of my dread and trying to plasma gun nobs, he either didn't have the time nor the energy to continuously plant mines. at which point it probably would have been better for me to get signum or bionics to deal with the nobs.
I'll quite happily get them against eldar because of the fact that it forces a ranger buy.
