What are those cables in Chaos power armour?

Postby PhatE » Thu 03 Apr, 2014 1:29 pm

Hey guys,

I've always wondered what the cables are in the power armour of Chaos marines are for. Like in a chaos terminator, or even the Plague champion. I'm presuming it's for powering the suit or something but sometimes the cables go inside their bodies (that's what she said! amIrite?) but even through their skulls on some of them.

Is it like an interface into their brain to better control the armour?

Probably. I know Space Marines have far greater accuracy than guardsmen not just because of their innate better eyesight, but also because their power armour has in built targetting systems.

Chaos doesn't have access to the forgeries and armouries of the loyalists so their equipment is a lot older and generally weaker. This (the machine spirit and better tech) is what brings loyalist marines back on par with chaos despite chaos having all the manifest gifts of the dark gods/daemons. I'm guessing the earlier versions of power armour were more primitive and didn't have all these upgrades as subtly in-built and therefore we have all these wires all over the place? Or it could just be evidence of the chaotic forces trying to maintain their slowly-dwindling armour over time as it degenerates further and further.

Yeah, as far as I know, Space Marine power armour links with its wearer via matrix styled plug-ins.
That allows the Space Marine to project a HUD directly into his eyes / brains for example.
Depicting his Squad's status and aim assist.

Also Power Armour absorbs excretions ( sweat, urin, etcetc ), recycles it and feeds it back to the Marine.

I think its just a case of Chaos Wargear beeing much older and more archaic.
More Modern Power Armour types also tends to cover up potential weakpoints, like the Mk8 that covers the cabels / pipes that lie exposed on earlier armour variants.

Alternatively it just could be a case of these Chaos Marines melting / fusing together with their armour, after spending so many millenias with it, exposed to warpenergies.
( I think loyalists remove it daily to clean it if not on mission, dont see Chaos Marines doing the same )

____

Especially Terminator Armour I believe needs these kind of implants plug ins to operate to its full potential.
If I remember correctly, in the TT, Inquisitors in Terminator Armour didnt get all the adventages out of it ( the additonal melee attack if I remember correctly ) because they didnt have the necesarry plugs to their nervous system.

except that the imperium has a really awful made lore that says that 10k years ago (when chaos formed) the technology was actually better thus chaos armor is in fact.. better

Except in 10k years that better armour becomes rather worse :P

If I remember correctly, modern power armor is actually better than the ones during the Great Crusade, as the Adeptus Mechanicus actually invented new types of power armor after the Heresy.http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Power_a ... z18o6iSx1g

Besides, the loyalist Space Marines probably had better access to repairs. They do, after all, have a galaxy-spanning empire to supply them. Chaos Space Marines, on the other hand, have to constantly steal stuff to survive, hence the constant raids.

those cables are supposed to be cool. they provide cool to various points on the marine. eldar have the same thing. they send the cool from their forearms to their weapons. chaos also has spikes which can generate more cool and can also stab people or hold things, like dinner.

That depends on the armor. Mark IV, which came out just before the Heresy and was mostly distributed by the then-loyal Warmaster Horus to like-minded (Traitor) legions, is supposedly among the most advanced armor types ever, on par with the current Mark VI. Mark III is tough as balls from the front, and Mark II is just old. If I recall correctly, Mark II and III had internal power cords and couplings, and Mk IV is when they started putting cables outside the armor (they still do in Mark VI, which is especially obvious in the abdominal area). Old terminator armor variants, such as the Cataphractii, however, still had a lot of the cables on the outside. With all that said, Chaos Space Marines probably have cables on the outside of their armor simply because it's cheap and feasible ad-hoc maintenance.

The armor input/feedback works through the black carapace implant. AFAIK the Spess creation process hasn't changed since GC era, it's certainly not improved (on the contrary they don't even understand all of it in the 40K, they just repeat the steps ritually).

I think the entire question is pointless and it's just a matter of artists creating whatever seemed cool at the moment without too much thought on how it would function...

Yeah I think you're all reading too much into it. Could be a million reasons for a random cable, it's just artisitc flourishes. Exterior cables more common on CSM since it makes their stuff look more archaic and suits the look.

I'm pretty sure it's a cable that ensures a continuous flow of strawberry milkshake.
