Dawn of War soulstorm Group
Hi, Eerie and I just started a Dawn of War Soulstorm group in order to simplify and organize finding games, since ATM it’s pretty difficult find them. For that purpose and having in mind that some people are interested in playing the older DoW titles we have created a steam group for anyone who is interested in both playing some games or watching some replays or potential streams.
If anyone is interested in participating or helping out feel free to join. Our goal is to get as much people as possible in order to make playing some awesome team games or 1vs1 viable. Another objective is to get balanced matches so all players are welcome; those who want to try the game and learn it as well as those who are veterans already.

Aren't the servers going down by the end of this month though?

Does it use gamespy? I don't remember.

But aside from that you can play over hamachi/tungle.

Who needs servers, when You can host the games directly via tcp/ip? It's not retri that will not work without steam

Well I didnt know that since I've been playing the game recently and worked well for me even after the THQ bankrupt. But nevertheless since it will even be harder to find games its still good to find people who want to play since it will be playable by hamachi/gameranger.

If thats the case, my hard copy of Soulstorm can still be able to play with other Steam bought copies of Soulstorm through indirect server host like hamachi right?

You only need to have the same version of the game. No need for hamachi or other 3rd party vlan like that. I can show people how to enable dmz and host games directly to be joined via ip address. We can test it even now if u want.
Edit: I mean, I've just tested this thing with Freeman, he joined my server without any problem.

Prolly he didn't have dmz set up or ports enabled. Add me on steam, we can check it even now.
By a matter of fact, a lot of different games can be played like that, since they enable direct tcp/ip connection.

Sounds good, folks. I'm in
There have been previous discussions on these forums to a similar effect, but I'll repeat myself that the logical jump for most here if they want to give DoW a crack again would be the DoWPro mod.
Much as ELITE brought much needed balance to Retri, DoWPro does the same for SS. And given the age of SS, much of the community have moved on to mods anyway. DoWPro and Ultimate Apocalypse being two of the bigger examples.
I'll pop the former's steam group here

There's at least two threads in the 'Random Shit' section on the topic of DoW1 mods, which would also be good starting points.
Also: utter sadness at gamespy going down after all these years

Yeah, but like I said earlier it's easy to play without it, there just won't be a gamespy lobby and stats.

Re: Dawn of War soulstorm Group
Yeah I understand what you are saying since I also play those mods myself but the main focus of our group is to play casual games more for fun rather than being ultra competitive about it. Also we want to encourage to play those people who never bothered to try the multiplayer of DowI to give it a try, so i think its better by using the original soulstorm that they are probably more familiar to. That doesnt mean that we won't host from time to time other mods like UA.
Re: Dawn of War soulstorm Group
You can set up a p2p VPN between one another. That's probably the simplest way to do it.
I wouldn't advise doing DMZ, it's a bit of effort and can be hard to get going. Just be careful as to which one you all decide on doing if you choose a VPN.
They're quite easy to install and requires little (if any) configuration.
I remember soulstorm being able to host servers so if you're extra good the you can port forward on your router and then people can connect through that without doing a VPN or using a DMZ. Don't remember if there's a command you can run from the console to connect with, so for instance "connect public address:port", or "connect 69.69.69.69:1337

Since everyone forgets, my timezone is AEST (UTC/GMT) +10 hours. AEDT is (UTC/GMT) +11 hours. Hopefully no-one tells me what time any tournament is on.

Re: Dawn of War soulstorm Group
Yeah but not everyone knows how to do that or don't want to learn. 1 click installs are what people understand
