voices

Postby Wis » Sat 07 Jun, 2014 2:03 pm

Hi,
Since the mod add some units i was wondering if you were interested in making their own voicelines into the game.
I got all the files for the voices of mad dok, kasrkin, flash gitz, grey knights, dark ripers, librarian, chaplain, etc.. from the previous dow games wich sound great in my opinion.
If you got any idea on how to implement and configure voicelines for your mod ill gladly do it.
peace

Agree with Ar-Aamon

This would actually break a couple of laws and terms of agreement which will pretty much put the Elite team in trouble with the respective owners.

Well it is illegally acquiring assets that are not of the modder's property and re purposing them for free distribution within the public domain, so whilst a nice idea, it is completely illegal.

Hmm as i said earlier i'm just here to propose help and ideas to improve this mod. Integrating new units into the game is good but having a proper voice acting is essential.

That said on the other hand i've been modding games for quite a while, I'm part of different modding communities for other games including Medieval 2 total war, elder scroll games, fallout games, and more.

I wont make any references but the most popular mod for Medieval 2 total war uses voicelines and music from EA's Battle for Middle Earth 2, some mods uses sound files from interplay's first fallout game into Fallout 3, and about elderscrolls i wont even take example of movie music or sound files from other games since there is too many. So far I've never heard of any complaints.

Since I know by myself that all these modders are very cautious I wonder how putting sound files from relic into another relic game for a free mod is prejudiciable. I know every files is relic's property and cannot be used for commercial use wich is totally normal but if the creator of the mod has a contact at relic or sega or whatever its called now, he should probably ask him if hes in doubt. I think this is worse trying to at least ask directly to relic.

But for mods I've made myself I've always used soundfiles from other games because I liked it and mentionned it in description and never had trouble with anyone.

I see, but it is still illegal, and whilst you have no qualms and no has flagged you, the people here are a lot more careful because without the modders, there is no mod. This particular community (from my perspective) seems to be a lot closer than other mod groups, so the modders may not want to do this, as on the off chance they get caught, the effect would be felt throughout the community. This mod is very important as it fixes a game with questionable balance and implementation. Reusing assets from another title that you own, even if it comes from the same company, will always be taking assets that do not belong to you and using them without permission in an extension of your own.

I think that since you do not take credit or try to get money from your mod wich i assume here is not the case and notify it in your webpage or mod description and all is perfectly clear, you wont be troubled.

On another way i reassure you every community is close to its modders no one wiches trouble for another.

This is something that need to be asked directly to relic if in doubt I think its worth the pain since those sound files will really fit perfectly .

Look we all appreciate your good intentions, but there's the small matter of stuff needing to be legal.

Now this could hypothetically be implemented if someone was to talk to Relic and explicitly get permission to use their stuff, but tbh you're unlikely to get a response, let alone permission.

Worth a try though, if nobody has asked before, since this isn't exactly a new game it's really a question of if they can be bothered or not.

I think this is what it really comes down to, a lot of the examples you gave above Wis are mods for games which are pretty long in the tooth and largely forgotten by developers due to new releases and updated versions of the game existing. The Total War franchise for example.

DoW2 whilst getting on now is still not that old. But yes I think there is some perhaps over cautiousness surrounding the use of other assets in Elite. I'm fairly positive the Tau models that have been used in numerous mods are just straight rips from DoW1 and no mod that uses them has been taken down or been contacted about it.

Of course though it's up to the lead devs whether they want to entertain that risk, however slight it may be now.

I am by no means a legal expert in the realms of copyright, but for business reasons I do have to deal with this issue a lot, so I'd like to say this entire matter is dependent on Relic's terms.

Content creators are well advised to lay out a guideline for clients, customers, and in this case users, what they are to be expected to abide by with their purchase. In fact, in some situations you can charge more or less for more rights. As a graphic designer, I can choose to sell to a client full rights and permissions to do whatsoever they please with whatever identity I create for them, or, if they feel like being cheap, I can sell them limited access to the identity I've created and only use it for explicit purposes (e.g. print use, web use, specific print use such as shirts, banners, flyers, etc.) at a lower price (Why you'd want limited access to your identity as a business I have no idea but hey... Those people are out there).

In this situation, and particularly for Steam users, Relic has sold all of us a license to use the game which they have sold. The fair use of such material will have been exhaustively laid out in their terms of use displayed or hidden somewhere in their purchase process (you could probably find it on their website). So there lies your answer. In a giant wall of text that no one wants to read. Another option would be to contact them directly, but as someone else has already pointed out, you'd probably be speaking on deaf ears.

For the most part though, there is, to my knowledge, no explicit copyright law which you can abide by in videogames (aside from issues such as piracy). Each developer has the right to give you whatever rights they please to the games they sell. Some devs are okay with modding (Bethesda), and some aren't even okay with you sharing a video of the game (Nintendo & SEGA).

Tldr; Don't do it, it's not worth the head ache.

The UA Mod and Inquisition Daemonhunt Mod both made their own unique voice lines. Maybe you can use them if

A) they allow it and

B) Caeltos is willing to use them

As you said you're experienced in modding so it's a wasted opportunity if we refuse your offer to improve the mod with new voice lines.

I believe Cael' tried to contact the Deamon Hunt guys in the past, but failed. Atleast I believe he mentioned something along those lines.

Correct me if I'm wrong now, but since Relic doesn't own the game, their opinion would be kind of useless.

I hope people could start grasping the difference between developer and publisher, it's not very complicated.

@joehtosis... Are you serious?! Hidden somewhere in the purchase process? You haven't noticed the EULA text you have to accept when installing every piece of software you buy?

Hey, that's my point. After accepting the 100th contract for a video game how many people still pay attention?

Hmm yeah possible cause it seemed they were on hold for a while but lately they are quite busy on moddb. I think it's worth o shot to ask them again.
