How could my enemy have won this match?

Postby Bazzyboss » Tue 17 Jun, 2014 9:06 am

Hi guys, I was playing a few 2v2 matches yesterday as IG, mostly with the same people. We ended up in a match, me and nids vs Orks and SM on Medean Cliff Mines. I felt like once I got to t3, I managed to pull out some powerful units, got a Baneblade in the centre Victory Point, with a Leman Russ. After that it was pretty much our enemies trying to ninja cap, and the ongoing battle of the Orks and Nids while I easily held back the SM, (who was ninja capping me too, my micro is terrible)

So my question is, how could the enemy team have turned this match around? And destroyed my Baneblade and army and get map control? And what did I do wrong in this match? Also, respect to The Mixxxer for being such a nice and friendly Tyranid, and defending me from the horde.

An interesting game. One you very nearly lost as well.

1) Don't float. Often you had 600 req and 100+ power and you sat in tier 1 with no tier 1.5 squads (HWT, Cats,Spotters). You floated all of the way to tier 2 and it really hurt you.

2) The setup teams. Don't bash your head against them, and I know fog of war is there for a reason, so it is balanced, and I knwo you cannot see beyond the fog, but really, you should have known that you can flank them easily on that map instead of running at them, even with Ogryns. I thought your dealings with the FC were not bad, but you could have made it easier to yourself by using the Inquisitor's stun, then you would not be fighting him so long. The problem with him was he tied you up, leaving your ally to run into two enemies.

3) The Ogryns. Don't run at setup teams, they will melt. Instead you can flank around, or even get interrogator's armour to infiltrate them so they do not get shot at when running. Also, buy back their Bone 'ead, he makes them so survivable and gives you the knockback.

4) Support your allies. Tier 3 is a good example of where I think you supported well, so well done, but tier 1 was a mess, always charging in 2 GM and not waiting for your ally, leaving you broken and him unsupported, though he did well on his own, I think he also pushed too far, whereas you never pushed. If you find the gens, destroy them when you can, do not play too defensively.

One final thing, I may have missed some things out, but your comment on "I hate VP modes because your army strength does not matter it is just them ninja capping." Wat!? No, it only works like that if you do not use your army. Use your army to fight, then consolidate, then you win, instead of making it pointlessly close like you did there.
The internal battery has run dry, the game can now be played. However, clock based events will no longer occur.

One other big thing, and I think this might be where your frustration with ninja capping comes from: If you have a lead as big as you did, leave units at VPs to protect from back capping. Leave the Ogryns or the Lictor at the outer point, maybe add a suppression team or something that can knockback, while the rest of your army controls mid, maybe pushes forward a bit after skirmishes and bashes power or whatever; but don't over extend ofc, especially your baneblade. If you know you can easily take a fight, defend against the only other ways the opponent can stay in the game. The lack of defense at the outer VPs really ended up greatly prolonging that game.

Your teammate also chased into base a lot and ended up retreating his whole army on multiple occasions. Probably shouldn't do that, it cedes map control and allows your opponent breathing room/map control. There's probably more to add, but I just skimmed through it at 4x. ;)

Alright, thanks guys, I knew my Ogryn player was pretty bad, but I thought they could withstand the shots and get through, and I was pretty angry when I posted that thing about VP point matches, I usually love them when I win from ninjacapping :p.

I think I will upload another replay, one I had earlier, we won this time too, but we almost lost, we got down to 90 points then turned it around, I felt that this time there was more teamwork between us.
