Favourite "Elite Schemes" and what next

Postby sterling » Tue 08 Jul, 2014 5:45 pm

Pretty simple - what is your current favourite "Elite DLC Scheme" in 2.3 and what would you like to see next from the options given?

I was really torn between Emperor's Children and Exodites, but I am really interested as to what you would make of Exodites, so I chose them.

As for a current favourite Elite scheme, well, I think all of the Chaos stuff is amazing, between Iron Warriors and Thousand Sons, but really all of it is just fantastic.

BTW, wasn't there some kind of free nids DLC where carnifex gets more thorns and stuff? I've seen replays where that DLC was used, but could not find out why that was scrapped.

I'd like to vote for an Eldar scheme of some sort, but Exodites and Harlequins both seem like really bad choices for the unit roster you've got to work with.

Why not a Craftworld with a distinct look like Biel-Tan?

Favourite scheme from 2.3 would be Thousand Sons or World Eaters. Night Lords are almost up there, some of the additions just look very roughly pieced together.

Biel Tan are not that distinct, they are just ugly. Something more distinct would be Alaitoc or Saim Hann (A Saim Hann biker gang would be cool).

P.S. Alaitoc are my favourite. X)

Exodites. Not only would be original, but it's also a higher challenge than making another marine chapter.

Saim-Hann seems an impractical choice because pretty much all of their signature units are simply not in the game. I do really like the colour scheme. One of the few old schemes that works for things-wot-aren't-miniatures.

I think of Alaitoc as the absolute standard as far as Craftworld Eldar go; can't really think of anything about them that stands out other than the Pathfinders...? Might be cool to see some really pimpin' Ranger replacements, though.

Biel-Tan infantry do look really, really bad in DoW2; the original scheme was designed for small scale miniatures, and it shows, but their focus on the Warrior aspects translates more easily to the Elite unit roster. We've got five Aspect Warrior units, if I recall correctly. What better excuse to go nuts on them? Plus there's the vine patterns for the vehicles, I guess?

In the end, it's up to Sterling and crew to decide what they can make look good (and feel like working on). This isn't Space Marines/Imperial Guard/Original Chaos Legions, with a well established visual language. Everything the Eldar use is technically hand crafted.

But the idea of Alaitoc is that you can create a much more Ranger focused look (without changing the default Rangers). I think a very nice stealthy camo look could be created.

Elder have been a bit of an issue in figuring out how to approach new schemes - I want to make and use new models and for that reason Harlequin and Exodites make the most sense as there is more visual variety in the units.

From looking at the different Craftworlds there seems to be variety in the units they use but no real distinct "look" about them other than colors and symbols - which can be achieved in the army painter.

I think it's weird that GW never posted examples of the potential variation in Hive Fleets. You'd think nids would have more variety to them than Sphess Mahrines because each fleet adapts to different threats and encounters different worlds. You could have a world where heavy gravity forces the fleet to produce gants and gaunts adapted to the conditions. Or a mountainous world forcing the creation of forces equipped with claws to traverse the terrain.

I voted Salamanders but would like to see Emperor's Children and potentially one of the new Eldar schemes.

One of the Behemoth skins has extra bits for the carnifex iirc.

New favorite schemes are probably space wolves and thousand sons. All is dust.....

This, what I have been thinking, please do pre heresy, or at least try to do a scheme using a lot of MK IV, then I might just recolour them Word Bearers and start playing SM.

Pre Heresy Emperor Children are easy to do.

Use Chaos Space Marines common armour -> eliminate Chaos references -> add Imperial references (double headed eagle on the chest, patchments, SM stuff...) -> add EC references (wings on the shoulder..) -> add Shumas Mk4 helmet -> adds pre heresy Terminator model -> add Pre Heresy stuff -> Success.

I worked on Pre Heresy EC stuff, but I dropped it because I was fucking busy.

Eldar could use some love, SM and Chaos get like 90% of the attention but surely Eldar have got serious potential for custom schemes. Lend a hand to the retro races eh? :D

Exodites. Class work btw.

I personally like the Death Guard, pappa Nurgle would be pleased.

I know this isn't on the voting options, but I'd like to see a Carcharodon (Space Sharks) scheme in the future. Can't go wrong with sharks that are in space 8-).

But Crimson Slaughter are just like World Eaters in colour, and the models you get there are actually GW's way of portraying all Chaos in a more daemonic way. Honestly, Crimson Slaughter don't look much different to "generic" Chaos.

I agree. Except they look cooler...

For Slaanesh, i just imagine these models in the Black Legion's colors.
Or Emperor's Children's colors.

Uhm, so good, uuh... i need to buy a box of them.

The Emperors Children Legion were my favourite of the Traitor legions in the Horus Heresy books. They have some really awesome back story, fantastic characters and Fulgrim has been in my top 3 for HH books.

My vote goes to them

I was going to say I can remember seeing some angry marine models a while back.

Seems to be a lot of interest in Salamanders, any ideas on what kind of a look you'd like to see? As a start I was thinking the existing legion of the damned models with the flame motifs.

Probably taking the Legion of the Damned and the texture from the Alpha Legion greave.
Just remember that they have black skin and red eye, for the helmet-less models.
