Hello,
I'm not too sure if there's a Eldar guide around here hence the making of this thread.
Anyway, I'm a Space Marine/Ork player and I want to start playing Eldar, but I have little to no idea on how this race works.
So I'm asking you Elder players out there what the basics of this race are, some strategy's I should use, what the different commanders are like, build orders, ect.
The only thing I know about the Eldar so far are that Banshee's are ridiculous in melee if used correctly and Dire Avengers are similar to Shoota Boyz, and that they're really squishy even more so than Orks, but that's about it.
Any tips/tricks you can provide will be much appreciated.

Well, what's your usual build as Eldar?
Not all builds are effective everytine
What do you usually go for?
Eldar units are specialized.
You need to get the right unit for the right situation and know when to tech up
Which commander do you tend to use?
Different commanders will make you treat engagements (and to a small extent, build orders) differently
But most importantly, what is it about the Eldar faction that causes you problem?
What build/faction is it that makes it difficult for you to Eldar?

Well, I've never played Eldar besides a couple test runs which didn't go so well.Discreet wrote:Well, what's your usual build as Eldar?

The starting builds I used vary on the different commanders I use. For the Warlock I go triple Guardians, for the WSE I go Banshee and Guardian.
I have no idea how they work, so I basically I need to know everything about them ranging from mid game builds, late game builds, strategy's, war-gear combinations, ect.

Hmm... This is gonna be a bit tricky since I need to know what's causing you trouble.
What caused your test run to fail miserably?
Anywho, Let's start with T1 and work our way up from there.
As far as I'm aware of, there are around 3 - 5 common Eldar builds for T1 that I've encountered.
(Additional Info)
(DA = Dire Avengers
Shees = Banshees
Shury = Guardian Weapon Platform)
Including your starting unit, They are, in no particular order:
1) DA -> 2x Shees -> T2 OR Rangers/Shury
2) DA -> DA -> DA -> T2 OR Rangers/Shury
3) DA -> DA <-> Shees -> T2 OR Rangers/Shury
4) DA -> Shees -> 2x Shury OR 2x Rangers -> T2
Now imagine yourself being forced into using one of these builds. Try to see if any one of these builds could have helped you in practice sessions where you were butt raped.
I'd elaborate more but when you have assignments worth 46% of your Semester and 4 days left to complete it, you kinda get busy quickly

I've seen this before way back when I started. Worked well with WSE and his group teleport ability since people don't usually expect this kind of thing to happen. But yeah, it's more of a rare build nowadays.

That's more of a gimmick then a viable build.
I would not take his advice very serious regarding double banshees, as it will more than likely hurt your economy. Banshees are fragile and quite expensive to reinforce given this fact. You might be able to support one banshee, but two will almost ensure that your eco will take a hit provided your opponent isn't half-brain dead.
Furthermore, your build order shouldn't be tailored as something that is a procedural build sequence (i.e always building dbl dire into shuri for example). Ideally, you want to leave your builds open to consideration of what your opponent is fielding, in hopes of countering whatever it is they may have. Your opponent builds a setup team? Consider getting rangers to pick off the setup team from afar.
Best thing to do is check out some replays on Indrid's channel - he usually gives out some commentary on what players should/shouldn't do, and it will give you a general idea of how certain players handle Eldar versus other races. Can't say much myself as I'm not an eldar player, but I will say that rangers are really damn annoying to play against as some races

Tbh the only way is to play them, they are very frail and you need to understand that the only times you want to engage is when you know you can win especially on the pre-upgrades phase at the start of the game, and you'll need experience to understand that, also generally you first want a T1.5 unit and then roll out upgrades but there are many exceptions which are impossible to list, you'll get the feeling of that as you play them.
Generally speaking 1 1 1 1 build which is base DA, shees , shuri , rangers work against everything always, but there are many situation where double rangers, or 3 DA or double DA + shees or double shuries, double shees and other combinations work better, but as far as being able to do everything and have a secure T2 the 1 1 1 1 does it all.
Also as eldar you want to cap power asap and get node + 2 gens instatly if you go rangers first or 3 gens if you go shuri.

Re: How does one play the Space Elves (Eldar)?
Thank you guys for all this info, I'll keep it in mind when I start doing practice runs. I'll keep you guys updated on how I do.
Anyway, I'll use some of these builds and practice with them and let you guys know what happens.
But when it comes to T2 and T3 that's when I fail miserably, I usually just go with the default wraithguard, or a wraithlord.
Alright, I'll check out the Eldar replays on his channel, thanks.
Alright, that makes sense. I'm just used to having tanky space marine and sorta tanky Orks, so maybe I should choose my battles more wisely.
Oh, wow I was calling Dire Avengers "Guardians", I feel retarded, lol.Discreet wrote:Hmm... This is gonna be a bit tricky since I need to know what's causing you trouble.

Well, that I know, but since I know little to nothing about this race it's good to know some default builds.Commissar Vocaloid wrote:Furthermore, your build order shouldn't be tailored as something that is a procedural build sequence (i.e always building dbl dire into shuri for example). I'm also that way, but knowing really nothing about a certain race doesn't always work out so well when playing. Learned that with Nids and sinap bombs, lol.Ace of Swords wrote:Tbh the only way is to play them, they are very frail and you need to understand that the only times you want to engage is when you know you can win especially on the pre-upgrades phase at the start of the game, and you'll need experience to understand that, also generally you first want a T1.5 unit and then roll out upgrades but there are many exceptions which are impossible to list, you'll get the feeling of that as you play them.

Re: How does one play the Space Elves (Eldar)?
I highly suggest learning eldar using the farseer. As Ace says, you should only commit to a battle if you know you can win it, and the 50 sight radius she has for some reason (10 longer than other heroes, at least according to the codex) is invaluable for that purpose. Same with her farsight global. Guide is also a very good ability and remains highly relevant throughout the game (+30% range and damage, works on pretty much anything I believe). She is also a pretty solid fighter despite what her stats might suggest - she is fast and attacks quickly, making it likely she'll PROC her fast 360 degree special attack.
For wargear, she has a lot of expensive and fancy stuff but you can't go wrong with Doombringer, the T2 robe that gives her energy regen and Psychic Storm, and Spirit Stones. All three of those wargears are ridiculously good, in particular the storm that is like casting the mekboy's electric armor ability at long range with 60% more damage and suppression on an armor that gives you more energy instead of sucking it all up.

I suggest trying out Warp Spiders if you aren't sure what to get. Their high dps coupled with the haywire grenade make them a good go-to unit come T2. If you want to practice feel free to send me a friend request over Steam, Lt Ekul is the name.
