Would anyone be interested in this event?

Postby Surprise Attack! » Sat 21 Mar, 2015 4:12 am

This is not a tournament, nor will it affect any skill-based leaderboard rankings. It is just for fun.

- 1v1 using Elite mod
- reward via monthly raffle: (20 USD) steam wallet card
- 3 pts for win; 1 pt for loss
- 5pts for a single raffle "ticket", always rounded down. In other words, 9 pts = 1 ticket. For example, Toilet has 42 pts, so his name appears 8 times in the "hat" so to speak.
- post working link to replay and results on forums to earn points
- will be a leaderboard of "most points ever", but points reset every raffle cycle
- Additional rewards for the top 2 players on the leaderboard: 20 USD steam wallet card

The format of the event is designed to allow everyone to win in addition to those who perform the best. Since there are no brackets, the winner will not be limited to the best players, just those who play the most.

Yeah, it's 1v1 and I am forever interested in whipping up interest, but people will play in events more thn they will play for money. This of course depends on the event, MRT offering five euro and EMC offering two hundred, though I think people are more motivated if the event is public rather than private, I.E. streamed. Maybe what you suggest is unnessecary? At least I don't think it needs to invoilved raffles, but I think it's good. Perhaps cross this over with fight club?
The internal battery has run dry, the game can now be played. However, clock based events will no longer occur.

Well, it's also something that could promote playing over a longer period of time, rather than only one event a month that's only a few hours long. It's basically a ladder ranking system, which is kewl, and could definitely promote playing for some people. There's also no reason streamers couldn't get in on some 1v1s when they see them happening.

Problem being nobody will play against the better players despite getting points for losing just because, well, it's time inefficient - why play someone you likely won't win vs compared to someone you likely will?

It's another instance in which those who are bad at the game are rewarded for such. Winning being more important than actual skill shown/developed.

Fair points.

The main problem right now, in my opinion, is that outside of a select few and those who participate in certain events, there is little incentive or reason for people to play 1v1 games.

Just getting people to play 1v1 with each other regardless of who they play is going to be a decent first step in the right direction. I also wouldn't underestimate the ability of people to self-police the balancing in these games. Even if someone doesn't know who Noisy is, for example, will surely get wise to the idea that he won't win against Noisy and will stop playing him. Eventually the pros will have to play against each other if they want to progress, since no one else will play them.

Long term goals might involve people getting better at 1v1 in general, and from that larger pool, you might find a few more Crewfinities or Fredbriks to add to the 1v1 retinue.

I have to admit I wasn't a fan of 1v1s for a very long time but I am warming up to them. I get Torpids point on people not wanting to play vs the good players. It is just frustrating to constantly loose if there is nobody around to help you improve. It is a strength-of-character thing though. Some are made for 1 on 1 competitive plays, others are not.
Still Torpid is doing a very good job encouraging (at least me) people to play more 1v1s by casting his videos because you WILL learn something from them. I can not speak for all the others but that is why I haven't tried 1v1s earlier. The learning curve is simply not as steep as in team games. Too many things to account for and that you can do wrong.

So long story short, I would be very interested in such a format. :)
