New Grey Knight Player tips

Postby Draknen » Tue 07 Apr, 2015 2:57 am

Hello I have been playing multiplayer for a week now. I know this really is a noob experience to you veterans out there. However I wish to improve and this game is awesome even if I lose. I like the grey knights so I have been playing them for a bit and I just did a 2v2 match up that I wanted some advice on. Here is the link http://www.gamereplays.org/dawnofwar2/r ... 02353#disc

Again I know I am new but I am opening myself up to every helpful comment you can throw at me.

Thank you for your time.

Not a GK player myself, but there are probably some useful tips here: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=1326

Crewfinity did a really good writeup here:
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1321#p34358

I would still love to see a continuation of it!

I've been playing GK lately. Their T1 is solid, but scales badly into T2, when ultimately the toys they have to play with are more expensive and less OP then what other factions can field. T3 gets better, though you should only go there if you are well ahead (which I find hard to make happen in 1v1) or it's a team game.

Try the Plasma Cannon Dread - it's amazing.

Thank you for the info Wise Windu however I have looked at that post quite a bit to get a general reference for the grey knight faction. As well as some other insights. Thank you Cyris that post is one I have not seen yet I will definatly give that one a good look over.

PLASMA DREAD ROCKS except I was dumb with it in the game I linked. That kind of mistake will not happen again.

Thanks guys

Hello Everybody

I have played quite a few games as gk since my last post and I was curious if any improvements still can be made that I am missing. I am still working on starter builds however T3 seems to be an issue I have been having lately. I actually have no idea what to do in t3. As soon as I lose a unit (surprised by a bomb run) I do not know what to get or what to do at that point in the game. I never have enough req to get anything that can counter my opponent. Who at this point has a Land Raider or termies. In this case Chaos and IG were my oponents. Any suggestions on what I might be doing wrong or is this a simple matter of game anf army knewledge I am lacking.

Here is the game if you need a reference point

Thank you for your time

Ok, so GK t3 is actually pretty straight forward (I'm speaking of 3v3 perspective here since that's what you asked about). It works like this:

Do you have sufficient anti-vehicle?
If yes, get terminators first. Then paladins.
If no, get paladins, then put terminators on overwatch.

A quick note about your terminator variants ranged capabilities:
The incinerator sidearm is a very cheap upgrade (for a late game unit anyways, compared to nobz/loyalist/chaos terminator upgrades it costs almost nothing) and pretty much makes them impossible to kite by light infantry units, it does absolutely INSANE burst AoE damage. In fact I consider it so overpowered that I actually don't buy it, but that's another story :P

The psycannon is also pretty cheap and is great at chasing tanks and finishing them off on rear armor. Don't forget to use the mind blades global on your terminators to increase both their ranged and melee capabilities: judicious use of mind blades can make the difference between a living and dead vehicle, or a won and lost melee brawl.

You also might want to purchase a terminator librarian in t3 after your first terminator/paladin variant, he does an excellent job of supplementing them. Don't be afraid to experiment with him.

The Land Raider Crusader is like other Land Raider variants, park it on a VP with some support and have it shoot the shit out of anything that comes hear while ur IST repair it. It suppresses pretty quickly so it's pretty much unapproachable by any sort of melee unit unless it's assault terminators, enemy paladins, or supa tuff beam nobz. It costs red but also can be dropped anywhere, any time you have sufficient red and resources, so don't hesitate to help your allies out.

I'll try to look at the replay soon.

EDIT: Ok I looked through the replay, I think the big main mistake you made was floating so much req in the beginning of the game, you went with a light build which is fine in team games, but easily could have added another IST squad. Don't hesitate to build lots of generators either for your team when you have so much requisition.

Everything else I think will come with some more experience, just keep playing and practicing and trying things out and you'll get a feel for what to do :)

Thank you Forest radio I have been hearing that GK is only really capable of having out 4 more units + the BC without it taking to much of a toll on your upkeep. As I play more I am noticing I always do have more req than my teammates. However I have been playing kind of conservatively due to the fact that GK units other than IST are so expensive.
By the way The Vind Assassin is amazing I actually kept him alive one game...omg he does a lot of damage for 1 guy. ESPECIALLY TO VEHICLES!!!!

Thank you for the advice.

I have never actually seen the plasma cannon, the new heavy bolter and the flamestorm cannon dreadnoughts in action. Would anyone mind to post a video of one of those in action?

Thank you, battle-brother. Very interesting display by the Grey Knight Dreadnoughts. I wonder how the flamestorm cannon works though. The plasma cannon looked kind of OK and the heavy bolter has some range on it.
