A note on respect

Postby Swift » Tue 28 Jul, 2015 9:42 pm

I am not a moderator of these forums, I have no say as to how these forums are moderated and I have don't have a mini Codex in my pocket to administer pain to unfortunates who anger me. With that disclaimer out of the way, let's begin.

As of late the forums have become a place where a lot of biases have developed, prejudices fostered and anger accumulated. Plenty of topics have arisen that have been taken off topic, played host to flame wars or have been straight up locked. I remember when these forums were a place where moderation was non-existent and users could post sensibly to conduct clever and intuitive discussions, but it's now looking like what the new DoW II forums were like when they opened in September. So what's changed?

As it stands many of the members of this forum can post positively, coherently and in a non-offensive manner, but this whole site is poisoned by a select few who have decided that other users cannot be productive, take their arguments taken out of context and make many a useful thread obsolete. I'm not going to name any names except my own, I have been guilty of aiding in throwing threads off course, but I want to change the impression I leave and hope that some others do too.

When you are going to make a post, stop and think. Is this relevant? Will it help continue the discussion? Is gaining your moment of internet "Hurr hurr" worth posting something so very off topic? And most importantly of all, do you fully understand what you're talking about? The more thought that goes in the less stress we get out of it. Your reactions have huge implications on the mood of everyone reading it, because the person who posts after you has just read it, and if you've put them in a bad mood, you're probably going to make them put the next person in a bad mood.

So, I've sat here ranting on about things like it's all bad, but it's not. Everyone needs to pull together and just be happier, less opinionated and generally avoid fueling toxic discussions. Certain members need to just realise "Wait, is this really so bad? Is it OP? Am I not countering it right?" And if in doubt, post here for advice, if all you say is "Dis shit is OP", well, what do you expect? Advice will help you much more than telling us something is OP. And for those out there who would casually swat these claims away, would it hurt so much to offer advice? Just a little tip here and there or a short strategy talk? And if no one's listening, then hey, they're not worth it, move on.

But what we can all do is have a bit of respect, and respect especially for the god, the one and only Caeltos who gave us this mod and continues to balance it to this day. Caeltos is human, believe it or not, and he has a life to lead outside of this, so if he's spending all this time reading rubbish, it doesn't give him much faith when it comes to balancing this game further. What you write goes much further than you can imagine, so be nice, be civil and enjoy yourself.

I hope the forums can improve from here.

I hate to blow my own trumpet, but I think we might be seeing a bit more awareness from all posters now. This is good, keep it up.

Nope it's because I've descended the Iron Curtain of Doom. You're next in the firing line Swift.

I submit as a semi-honourable member of the forum to your will, Codex. May your mercy be quick in the coming and horrendously painful.

Well said. I played some games this morning for the 1st time in a few weeks and this is what happened. 1st game gk player yelled PC OP when i consider his faction very strong atm. Game 2 was apo and a ork player yelled noob and me and my mate for going 2 sm teams. Last time i made a topic on these forums my discussion on storm shield was locked due to it turning into a yelling op argument about sm. Starting to drift away from the game atm bit sick of the attitude along with steam dropping people and sound bug etc.
