If I remember correctly, in DOW2, while you are in melee, you have a ranged damage received reduction, I don't remember exactly how much (x0.5?), but that's not the point.
Suppose I have a melee squad AND a ranged squad smashing and shooting at a shieldwalled tyrant guard.
The TG is not fighting back, but is he supposed to be considered in melee ? and if so, does he receive the ranged damage received reduction ?

I'm pretty sure it wont take reduced ranged damage. At least not from AV sources. That would be stupid. But you can test it out.

It would not be the first time something stupid and unintended is in the game because no one thought about it before

The melee reduction only applies when the unit is using its melee weapon.

You are talking about ranged received damage reduction right ? not melee resistance aura, right ?
Next question : does TG, when shieldwwalled, still benefit of melee resistance aura ?
edit : wait, in codex, I don't see melee resistance aura on TG, is that normal ?
