Cheesy or not, unlike all the other teams, Fredbrik and I had actually developed a strategy that the other teams' random non-cooperative gameplay simply couldn't compete with. Had the other teams made an effort too to develop their own 2v2 strategy, Fredbrik and I would probably have been less succesful.
There are many different and awesome 2v2 strategies that you can do. Just from the top of my head I can think of several cool strategies that might work very well.
Tyranid synapse strategy:
The idea here is simply to get all the available synapses to maximize the combat effectiveness of your combined armies. Imagine a combined tyranid army that is boosted by both improved synapse, basic synapse, damage synapse, melee synapse, ranged synapse, regeneration synapse and of course in late game the speed synapse from the swarmlord.
Ork waagh strategy:
Warboss and mekboy/knob. Lots of waagh banners and lots of sluggas and shootas. With the bosspole equipped and a huge waagh, that ork army would steamroll any opponent.
Chaos worship strategy:
Both players pick chaos. It's probably best with sorceress and plague champion. The idea is to get the benefit from each others worship. Worship affects allied chaos, so this is possible. I imagine that both players can set up camp near the center and then proceed to fend off enemies with havocs, grenade heretics and lots of aoe options. In t2 shrines should be built to further enhance each other.
Space marine tac spam strategy:
This strategy is probably the easiest to implement. Player 1 picks force commander with shield and player 2 pick apothecary and gets the aoe heal in t2. Both players get 2x tacs and a third from the drop pod. From there it's pretty straight forward. Just roam around the map with your extremely durable army and destroy anything in your path.
Mekboy and techmarine strategy:
This strategy is actually just a variant of what Fredbrik and I did. The t1 build is basically the same but in t2 both players builds walkers. The idea is to have lots of repair units to support the vehicles, and most importantly to support each other with the kult of speed and blessings of the omnissiah.
I haven't tested all of these strategies yet, so I can't say at this point that they are all viable. I can think of a few more strategies, and there are probably many more that no player yet has thought of. Because even though 2v2 and 3v3 is very popular, people rarely employ actual strategies. I hope that this post will make people think more about the concept of strategies in team games. Especially in 2v2 where tournaments are sometimes played. I think that a potential 2v2 tournament will be a lot more interesting to watch, if the teams shows up with actual 2v2 strategies. I at least will do a strategy next time MRT is in 2v2 format, and if your team doesn't have a strategy, then don't expect to beat me
