Dow 3 Comp or casual?
So here is the deal.
I was a hardcore dow 1 player, That game was the soul reason that i became a gamer.
That game was the only reason i ever invested in a gaming rig. I FKING LOVED THAT GAME!
However when dow2 was announced i was excited as F!
I was imagining how awesome the base building and the units would look in those high graphics and I was really expecting the same game just with better graphics and more units and stuff, I was not ready for the drastic change in gameplay and that scared me of from dow 2.
However i did play all the campaigns for dow 2 and a lot of last stand and sometimes i even tried to play a skirmish game vs ai but i realized quickly how bad the ai was and never played it again after that.
In early 2015 i was watching elitemod casts by the three famous casters Rupee,Maestro and Indrid like it was a drug. And i was amazed of how awesome and skillful the game was especially when the casters explained the actions of the players and that was when i decided to join the elitemod community.
I started to play a lot I was kicked a lot and i was hated on a lot but eventually i was able to hold my own in game and for every day i played i realized how much i loved the competitiveness of the game and how important that is too a game.
So what im saying is that i did not know about how awesome this game was relic was not advertising its competitiveness enough and i believe that if they had advertised the game for its multiplayer awesomeness it would have been so much more successful.
So here is what im worried about....
Will dow 3 be a casual shit game because of the fear from relic of scaring off the consumers from the game like they did with dow 2? or will it be a high skillcap game?
After dow 2 i really dont care about the base building anymore, I dont hate it i think it has its place in an rts game but i dont want it to get in the way of the competitive aspect of the game.
Meaning they can have as much base building as they want as long as they make the game play competitive like dow 2.
So what do you guys think will it be a casual kid party or will it have sick ass skillful game play? or will they be able to bring the casual and the competitiveness together?

Larger armies - More units to micromangement.
Base-building - More macro-management. (This is a pretty big one, it depends on how far they'll go with this base-building aspect.)
You can play the game casually sure, just for the visceral and scale of the game. People enjoyed that in DOW1. In my opinion, the cover mechanic changes is a welcoming one. Because of the complexity and scale of the game, models refused to get in cover. (Which still persists as of today) so you need cover to be HUGE so all models can fit.
Hench, why the cover mechanic they've added in DOW3 is suited and tailored for everything, so you won't be frustrated that units won't get into cover anymore. Besides, the more open space the more freedom for the players to navigate their units. And as a plus, it means less pathing issues for larger units, and less incidents when crushing cover that might be vital.
It also helps in some sense where cover placement on a map doesn't interfere with the map balance.

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
Personally, I want to play competitive since it will be my first game I get to play from release, whereas in DoW II I feel little drive to become anywhere near decent. Even if the game doesn't turn out to be all that I hope it to be, I think I'll try to be as good as I can get. If not, oh well, I'll just try to enjoy myself, and failing that, play Elite.
The internal battery has run dry, the game can now be played. However, clock based events will no longer occur.
Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
Um usually a game can be appealing to casual players and be hard to master and played on an insanely competitive level.
MOBA games are generally the perfect example of this. Its easy to pick up and play casually with friends while on a pro level the competition is stiff as fuck. Dow2 scared most casual players (viewers, content creators and etc. etc.) with its stiff learning curve, having no tutorial for races and being unappealing from a design choice to the grass growing (base building) rts crowd which prefer bigger scale battles while creating a really harsh punishable multiplayer experience. The game gives you tough love which quite a lot of people dont want to deal with and the apparent ladder anxiety that a lot of players suffer from just scares most people. Also dow 2 was released on GFWL <---- srsly fuck that shit.
So its better to have an accessible game and have it alive for longer than have its stuck up it on arse and keep anyone from peeking in it.

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
It will be comp if there will be balance first of all. Winter Assault was on WCG once (patch 1.41 I think). Later on is was not balanced game. DoW 2 is not even worth to mention it

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
I will be a filthy casual. I'm a sore loser and simply do not have time to "git gud" just to have a shot at not getting asskicked all the time. I really hope there's a co-op mode.

well i hope you guys are right. I hope they bring both parts together. I just want to get the feeling you get when you outskill your foe
Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
Sega/Relic was recently pushing Company of Heroes 2 into the E-sports light at 1 point twitch even put it on the front page which boosted viewer numbers up to 10k for the day, which for a game that on average for a COH2 tournament hits 2-3k viewers was quite a leap, I don't think COH2 was built with Competitive in mind tho but the community wanted it, it may have sparked some interest For Sega/Relic, since e-sports is pretty main stream for MP games these days, maybe its time they got a piece of that pie too and I couldn't think of a better game for them to break into it with than DOW 3. If they do DOW 3 right and get the community on board with an Open Beta of some sort and listen to feedback from people who currently active in the DOW scene(Elite mod crew) then yes imo it could quite easily be the number 1 Competitive RTS.

I will plug Bbbos channel in case you haven't seen it yet
On subject of the game: WHO THE H*CK KNOWS? We have literally no information on that.

but we have experience from theirs previous productions. just get ready for 10000000000 DLC and no balance at all.
Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
Can never discount the possibility of corporate greed or stupidity but wh40k has one major advantage over sc2 in regards to implementing dlc which was done in Dow 2 as well. Mainly of going the way of Valve and making "hats" custom army skins like the dark angels ulthwe and etc etc.
I dorslly hope we don't see the shit that's is payed commanders and stuff.

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
I think its gonna be quite competetive.
It all depends how they mix Base building and Combat. Which in my oppinion they should be more focused on the Combat portion.
Have base building present but make it so it isnt a chore. DOW 1 did this quite well. It had Base building but it wasnt tooo demanding on Macro allowing you to focus on the battles and periodically tech up and build more units.
SC 2 is far too Macro intense. You mess up with your base and your economy isnt spot on you will lose every single time in the higher leagues because the enemy will have more bases and more units than you late game and you cant catch up.

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
Honestly, I don't have high hopes. I have this horrible feeling that it will have rock-paper-scissors balancing, which produces the absolute worst games imaginable.

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
The thing that concerns me is the unit diversity. PC Gamer magazine said that the terminators would be apart of their pick 3 (or 5) slot thing. This worries me about the number of normal units you can get.
On a side note: PC Gamer said that the game would include Heavy weapons squads, Assault Squads, Dreadnoughts Mechs, and Lightning Hammers.

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
watching the ingame gameplay video on youtube which goes like 12 minutes .... im completely disappointed. the way the SpaceMarines walk.... like cartoon figures with ... their legs swinging too extreme. theres nothing grim & dark anymore. For me it seems relic tries to force success with the game and adapti to moba-style games.... they betray warhammer-roots with it.
what you think?

Re: Dow 3 Comp or casual?
When I see the gameplay I feel like is not my game, the feeling overall is just too casual you might say, and Gabriel Angelos moving in Terminator armor like is nothing thows me off, but then I see the Imperial Knight in motion, the animations, the fact that its weapons overheat, and just the thing of seeing it moving, it looks so awesome that I get back into the hope train (note is not the hype train).
Is Relic we are talking here, they have made some of the best RTS games out there, if someone can make a game both massive like the first DOW and with a focus on micro and unit preservation like DOW 2, is them.
With the base building, based on what we have seen, DOW 3 is gonna be like COH 2 in that aspect, is there, but it exists to give players more decision power. do you want this building that fields these units or that one to get those other units and so on.
I'm willing to give them the benefit of doubt in this one, because no matter what, I want to see the game to be good and succed. If it is going to be comp or a casual, well, I think I'm going to save my judgement on that one for now.
