Beginner's Tourny?

Postby TGZero » Sun 15 Sep, 2013 12:59 am

I remember when Horus wanted to do a beginner's tournament earlier this year. Didn't get enough people and instead ran Saturday L2P sessions. I know there's the monthly rumbles, but a lot of advanced players enter them, which I'm sure turns off a lot of beginners. I've decided to try this month for shits and giggles, but I'm sure a lot of beginner's would love to have their own tourny every now and then. Just my two cents.

How does one decide who may enter such tournament though?
If you have any idea though, feel free to organize something :p

We don't even have the wonky Elo rating to help categorize players so it pretty much needs a host willing to evaluate all the players willing to join. I guess it would have to involve watching submitted replays and just deciding who's noob enough and who's not.

-shrugs- As a beginner myself, I'd go for plain old honor system. Match people based upon how long they've been playing Elite mod. It can be taken into account that skill levels may vary, but nothing like a beginner matched with a pro.

Anybody who abuses this and lies about their skill can be dealt with on an individual basis. It would be great exposure to other beginner players to set up practice partners post-tourny.

I never got the point of these even as a noob. I'd rather go out to try my best and lose vs some pros who I'd never have the chance to play vs otherwise, than compete to win some beginners exclusive tournament just to get some obligatory congratulations (that usually come with a condescending smirk) from people.

Call me/it w.e you want but thats my honest opinion.

I am not sure about others but in RTS games I HAAAATE losing and getting stomped is worse. So in these types of games i want my learning to be linear. It is much more exciting and fulfilling for me to BARELY lose than to get stomped over and over. You just probably have a much higher threshold for pain

I totally agree with you on the one-hand that playing against higher(much higher) skill level players is a solid way to improve your game. Some people can deal with this method, others can not.

A tourny for the lower-skill players is a great way to for the newer guys to get introduced to the game, find equal(ish) opponents, feel a part of this pretty sweet group of people. Ultimately, eetz for fun. Obligatory congratulations, or sincere ones, we're all learning players.

Plus, I wouldnt mind giving people motivation to get into this game. It needs a bigger playerbase.

I figure do what Horus did before: any beginner who wants to join the tourny should do a 1v1 and save the replay and upload it. There, advanced players can view the replay and decide if that player is eligible for the tourny. At least that's my two cents. Opinions? Suggestions?

You could easily send in a bad replay or purposely play bad. And who will take the time to even review all of these? By all means be my guest and host a tourney.

But I foresee a lot of whining.
"He's too good to enter" "Why am I not allowed to join? I suck" etc.

What about you guys just do a Nooby King of the hill ?
You could also check steam profile, how long he plays the game, has he played LS for a long time ? etc.

I don't think that's the problem. Cheaters can always be disgraced and disqualified. As for screening, it's obvious in advance there is no objective way of doing it, so the host will just have to be capable of making arbitrary yes/no decisions by their own judgment and saying STFU (or some polite equivalent) to whiners. I don't see another way around it anyway.

If you finally get things into the right direction and announce the tourney properly, i can check the date and maybe jump in with a stream - if that is what people want.

I highly doubt that "kids" are the only ones who will assume this. There are plenty of idiot adults just as there are plenty of idiot kids. I don't think using steam time as a measure of skill is an argument perpetrated simply by individuals of less than 13 years of age nor do I think this was an appropriate time to vaguely insult children.

Hello folks. Tis been a while. I still want to go through with this tournament for beginner's. What I want to do is this: Hold the tournament on the second weekend of December. Hopefully this won't interfere with too many holiday shopping/plans. I've decided to do away with the vids for entry. So, if you THINK yer a beginner, feel free to register for this tourny (be honest, please.) Standard tourny rules apply. More info to come.

Wouldn't it also be more handy if we used the steam group page and organize a monthly meet up, or bi weekly meet up where new players can join.
Like an announcement which says "so and so date till so and so date noob party blood for the blood god newbs for the skull throne" to keep things alive for newer players who just installed the game and don't have anybody to play with except for the high ranking players.
And then they can say, hey I am new wanna battle, and people thus schedule things out etc.

Sounds cool. I'd definitely be interested in joining. Will just have to sort out some internet connectivity issues before then. I've been kicked from two games for a bad connection already, and don't have any real mp experience.

HELLU !

So in my small opinion , I think things like " nuubs toruney " is waste of time and pretty much bad idea. We have to understand that you wont be able to say who is nuub who is not, its gonna be decision in hands players ( some nuubs probably or some EGO PROS ) and if some one does not like a player X will call him NUUB , or will say he is not NUUB to not allow him to play , dont know , but i dont see how this would work saying you are nuub and you are not ?
Also , we have to understand that this community is already small , split on to groups is an bad idea.
Another thing even the winner of such a toruney what he will say ? " fuck you PRO i won nuubs trouney ? im the champion ? " Nothing to be proud of.
I doubt the nuub tourney gonna be popular , maybe just to watch for fail games once or 2 but thats all. Think any " PRO " player will get bored after seeing 4th carnifex down from single lass canon.
We have understand that , the players diffrenaces , like , Player X play better vs player Z , but player X got problems to deafet player Y , and player Z can beat without problem player Y. What i mean some players game play styles are easier to counter for others and for others not.
Also we have to count bad day / time for playing / some days are like you feeling fucked up after the work or bad day in school, or maybe your girlfriend did not give you " head job ".
Also question is if this tourney will be in 1v1 mod ? or team battles ? If you want to created something like that , you need " rude " casters , some one who know how to play even on medium level and can tell truth to those nuubs guys they fucked up the game so hard he should shame ( or something like that ).

Point is if there will be no improvements for all those are in tourney , there is no point to waste time for them. Better is to do more Learn 2 Play Section but not where nuub Blessed is bashing some extra nuub cakes , or Kvek trying to learn some one that he even does not understand. Learn 2 play section should be created on forum an also on steam , for new players and tell them how to deal with some things , every 2-3 nuubs should get a guy with higher skill level and he should train with them 1v1.

If nuub guy does not want to play 1v1 forget him , he never gonna be even medium , just let him go and watch indrid cast and think he can understand this game.

PS . Haters will hate :P

Rataxas wrote:Also we have to count bad day / time for playing / some days are like you feeling fucked up after the work or bad day in school, or maybe your girlfriend did not give you " head job ".
xD

But yeah I agree with everything you said.

I mean what's the point in a noob beating up on a slightly less noob, and then less noob says other guy's not noob, other guy says yes i am nooobie, etc....

I recommend all u nubcakes nicely ask codex for some l2ps :p

The point is the players enjoy it and they can compete without getting facerolled in round 1. In case you haven't noticed, a lot of sports have leagues and competitions at different levels. You might as well say playing football is pointless if you can't make Champions League, just fuck off home to watch TV and cry then?

If you are not interested in the idea, then just ignore it and fuck off this thread instead. I'm more likely to watch Tex vs. Noisy than noob matches as well but the idea is fine.

Thank you, Lulgrim, for those words. Like the man said, if you don't like this idea, fuck off and don't bother with it. Period. I'm putting this together so that I and other beginners have a event of our own to play around with.

I'm hoping to get the tourney page up by next weekend, and then do some events with the beginner's leading up to the tourney. So, if you guys know some beginner's, tell them to watch the forums.

Hello folks! TGZero here with a little update. As someone suggested an at earlier date, I would like to do some Saturday events leading up to the beginners tournament. Basically, get a group of beginners together and do some matches. Maybe do it King of the Hill style, or just have a bunch of matches, where we can get to know each other and just have a jolly good ol' time (is that how English folk say it, Indrid? =P). Now I realize this may be a bit last minute, but I would like to have the first one this Saturday at 10 AM Pacific Standard Time. If I'm calculating this properly, that gives our European players some time to game with us in their evenings. Thank you for your time, and I hope to see ya there!

Indrid mentioned he'd been considering "ranked evenings", could you make this like that? Get someone to stream if a caster is available, agree that replays will be saved for skill rating estimation. We could especially use more data from low-mid level players in out stats system, and when the ratings get more reliable they can help picking even matchups.

That how we call here is waste of money , source and time , and you did compare that in wrong way. Yes sports have a lot of leagues at different levels but as one of the creator of the mod you should care much likely for that to get more skilled player in mod, other way in grim darkness future there will be only Noisy and Tex...
And if you say about competitions dif. levels , not sure you know but they count like al season or even a year for some champions, deppend. There is not comming like 1 guy and saying ok you are on this level you are on this and you are on this. They have you earn that proof that , show that. Damn boy ... think you dont know how this world work ..

Yeah i will FUCK OFF , cant even say my opinion in thread ? So why even that forum exist ? For ass lickers nuub cakes ? You have to get that in your empty head , if you make thread on the public forum ( this is PUBLIC forum ) you can expect that other will say what they think. FREE INTERNET BRO ! ( its to you lulgrim also )

And my small opinion , this community is going down , cause its already hard to play some good games , nuubs are bitching and cyring and in future there will left no good players to play. ( if im not right lulgrim why you all days play retail ? )

I have a great feeling you don't understand how the world works.
This forum isn't public at all. It's Lulgrim's personal forum.
Insults and such well written thoughts always get people very far...

What difference does it make to you anyway if these people organize something for themselves? It doesn't affect you in any way whatsoever.
