Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you.

I think freedom is having the right and the opportunity to vote.

And if you don't vote you're a disgusting, freedom hating commie.

I appreciate that the comment was half-tongue in cheek but I have a different view:

Rather than being a freedom hating commie (:D) could one not just be an elitist like myself; why should the hairdresser, the nurse and the doctor of economics all have an equal say as to how the economy ought to be ran? They shouldn't, but due to the way democracy works the only way to overcome such an absurd political system is for the vast majority of people to refuse to participate in it.

It's selfish and unethical to vote. Especially when one ought to know fine well that 1) One's most likely uneducated with regards to what the optimal way of running a country is and 2) One has no right to dictate how others ought to behave, that would overwrite another's right to dictate how one ought to behave. That's ignoring the fact that democracy openly and admittedly ignores minority parties too and caters for their exploitation.

There should be a test that has to be passed (and an online guide for that test) before one can gain the ability to vote. That test (and online guide) should be peer assessed by selected academics from across the political, philosophical, sociological and economical perspectives throughout universities in each of the voting wards of the country and reviewed every 2years.

Torpid, whilst some of what you say is good, we do not live in a world of ideals the brainchild of an English gentleman, it doesn't work like that unfortunately. The sort of compliance you ask for is so far removed from the way things work, the culture shock would be too much for the public.

Also, Eskpo told me today that he knew who I was because you told him about me, which left me very confused. You don't happen to stalk people do you?

Granting and removing the power of voting from regular people may seem like a good idea for running things smoother and getting the better guy elected. On the other hand, Hitler was probably very happy about his position in Germany in the late 30's, and excited for how easily he'd be able to change things for the better.

I think that once you start adding restrictions to who can vote and who cannot then you'll open up a whole can of worms, especially if you involve what we consider intellectuals. I would much rather trust old wisdom before youthful radical intellectualism, for example.

Also you should remember the Alamo more.

Remember!

Given how slow science is to progress among the rest of the disciplines we humans love so much I doubt you'de need to worry about that very much. Nonetheless, again, I'm not particularly sure why you would rather do that.

There are huge problems in the way our society functions on a near innumerable amount of levels. From our economic system, our judicial system, our education system, the way we cook, the way we eat, the way we discuss politics and the way we do war. All of these things can't be changed within a day, especially in the ways I would like as that would no doubt lead to a population who would stand there doing sod-all for the most part with the rest of them rebelling and a rioting like they were... American!

That said, that doesn't mean we should quit and just accept our shitty society. Rather we should specify our long-term goals and make short-term, socially-sound and politically viable maneuvers towards them. The longer we fail to do that the more misanthrophic those who could really help humanity will become.

On a different note Eskpo merely asked me who you were, to which I responded "a mediocre player". I don't recall any further specifics, I'm sure he was on about you as a player that is...

I think I disagree. Also I should've used the term slippery slope instead of can o' worms.

Nothing good usually comes of radicalism, especially youthful. Give the world to intellectuals and the youthful and they'd have the world burning in hours. How would we even define intellectuals to vote for us? One who makes logical and sound decisions in good times might not be rational with his/her back to the wall. (Peace/war generals is a good example of this) That's why you could never have a intellectual elite with full control of a countries elections. Also the world isn't ruled by old wisdom today.

It's a big brush to paint with, which OFC doesn't work realistically, but beats a ubermensch NWO anyday of the week.

To be honest, after my conversation with Eskpo I am not sure what he mean't he seemed all over the place chasing the fleeting glories of his idealistic clan.

Didn't I mention this?

Let's do a scientific test to answer your original question Toilailee. Look at the picture below.

Agreed. It's very apt and very true.
