Orkfaeller is correct, assault marines and VG can be deployed without jumpack and actually the drop pod insertion is pretty valid (imagine deep strike behind enemy lines to capture building or get into other tight places, where the JP would do more harm than good). That's why I put it in this thread.

Discreet, your points are all valid, but that's the general tradeoff which is true for all dedicated melee units vs jump infantry. VG without JP would trade their mobility and disruption for high melee damage, something SM is lacking till T3. Would it be always better choice than ASM? Certainly not, as it shouldn't be.

In theory you could even deploy ASM without packs, but I really dont know why you would want to do that.
Standard Vanguard don't even have jump packs ^^ You deploy asm without their jump pack so you get a 35 point reduction cost on their dedicated transport.
This usually means a rhino or drop pod for ~free (exchange for their jump packs).

How about calling down a special equipped Tac squad? In the General forum i saw a model of a grav gun (btw. GJ) where we currently got no use for. A droppod Tac with that weapon (the weapon should be nice, of course) could be intresting, even if you got already 1-2 normal Tacs. They can still be normal upgradeable, if needed.
