Is there a way to import skins of the ELITE mod to the original game?

You'd have to ask the gurus about that.

All I know is that, it's probably possible to replace existing models with a different skins, however - there are abit more limits as to what you can add in. However, no other players would see the skins as you would see them.

Adding them in the way we added them to Elite would make the game incompatible with other people playing retail.

It would be possible to make the army skins into .sga file mods, but that would require you to find all of the models and rename them to the files in retail, and then find all of the textures that apply to them, which is a tedious process. For some this isn't possible, because the number of models that are applied to each unit in the game is different than in retail. If, in Elite, there are two models applied to a unit, and in Retail it only has one model, you would have to remake the model by putting the two together to make the full unit replaceable.

Even if you did that, you would only be able to use one at a time per faction, because it's only a mod instead of something added through the game files.

And Cael is right, no one else would be able to see them.

....why not just play elite?

If you check the start of my thread you can download quite a few of them as "DLC replacers" - you need the paid relic stuff to use them though. But yeah as said before no one else will be able to see them.
