MRT 16 on Saturday, July 25th @18:00 UTC +1

Preamble:
While there was a good turnout for MRT 15, organizationally it was a mess. We're going back to the roots of an MRT; a good ol' fashioned 1v1 tournament to the death!

We'll be updating the rules to be tighter and cleaner and we'll keep you posted on any major changes. HOWEVER, for this tournament we're making a special rule:
Instead of picking your own hero to play in a match, you'll be selecting your opponent's instead.

We think this will mix up the meta of the matchups we see in the MRT as well as providing a little bit of spice to a tried and true formula.

General Info:
The complete set of information including Brackets and Participants are listed in the Monthly Rumble Tournament 16 page.

Date:Monthly Rumble Tournament #16 will be held on Saturday, July 25th.
Time: 18:00 UTC+1

The tournament will be played in the 1v1 format.
The tournament will be welcome to All Skill Levels.
The tournament will be played on the 2.4.2 patch.

Rules:
It's going to be a single elimination tournament and we'll play as many signups as possible.
Refer to the general rules thread for an overview.

There is a modification to the "hero picks" section of the rules. It is bolded below.

Map Picks
Maps are always selected before hero picks.

The first match of a round will always be a fixed map as shown in the brackets. After this, the map pick will be the loser's choice. Only maps in the map pool may be played to be considered a valid tournament match.

No map can be played more than once within a round. Each player will have the option to veto a single map during a round, excluding the first match map. Maps that are variants of other maps, such as Pale Tooth Gorge and Green Tooth Gorge, will count as one map and can't be selected in the same round.

Hero Picks
You MUST select 3 heroes or Random before entering the tournament.

The player on the top side of the bracket cell will lock in their opponent's hero first for the first match. Next game, the player on the bottom side of the bracket cell will lock in their opponent's hero first, and the order will alternate like this until the final game. In the final game of the round, the loser of the previous match will pick the map and then their opponent's hero first.

To check out who is on the top and bottom of your bracket cell, just look at the Brackets page. If your name is in the blue bar, you're the top of the bracket. If it's in the red bar, you're the bottom of the bracket.

Alright, couple of extra notes on this one.

  • First off, we're including Friday as an option to play the tournament. I don't really expect it to be the majority preference, but it doesn't hurt to keep options open.
  • As always, the date and time are pending. Let me know your preference.
  • I swear I'll remember to put the prizes up this time :P
  • If there is any confusion about any aspect of the tournament, whether that's in rules or procedure, let me know.
  • The ban list is cleared until further notice. You guys will have more time than none at all to prepare for them this time and I certainly won't be banning anything in the middle of the tournament again.

I'll keep in touch :P

Special shout-out to Dark Riku as well who's been a great help spotting some of the looser rules as well as the general mistakes in the pages. I'll be clearing them up as we go.

As a general update:
  • We're no longer doing a consolation match from this tournament on. While I would love to do them, literally every consolation match has been a finicky affair as competitors either are more interested in the finals or can't be found reliably afterwards. Thus, we'll only be awarding the 1st and 2nd place winners but in return they get double the winnings.
  • Players MUST select 3 heroes this time. I allowed for 1 or 2 hero picks before since hero selection was entirely up to you, but this time around it's an important part of tournament proceedings. I won't allow you to just pick 1 hero and avoid the special rule :P
  • Hero selections are allowed to be modified up till the start of the tournament. Either pm me on Steam, pm me here, or simply post any edits you want me to make.
  • Be advised that I'm only going to wait so long for you this time. I'm placing a max of 30 minutes on late arrivals to their first match. In addition, past that first match you are entitled to a 5 minute break after every match, but you will be expected to resume playing within 15 minutes of the end of the last match. I'll take a look at special cases, but otherwise you will be withdrawn from the tournament and your opponent will either be matched against a reserve or be automatically advanced to the next round.

Was discussed about and we decided yes. You can't exactly counterpick when you have no idea what you'll end up with. It also is in line with the overall "goal" of the special rule, which is to encourage players to play matchups that they wouldn't normally have selected themselves.

Random players will still counterpick the opponent, but are forced into Random every match. The same rules apply for them as usual; they must select Random and they must announce their hero at game start.

Of course. The reason this thread gets put up so far in advance is specifically for scheduling purposes. All you bros can tell me what times are good for you and I can adjust the date and time to match needs with some advance time.

I don't actually start updating registrations and such until around two weeks before the tournament actually starts. Even then, most of the major stuff happens within ten days till the tournament.

I'm in!

I really hate the commander selection rule. I know full well that I am one of the weaker players in the tournament, and with my life I do not have the practice time to have a bench of tournament prepped commanders. I appreciate that it will reward players with broader skill sets, and be more interesting as a spectator, but I do not like it as a competitor.

Commander picks:
BC and 2 other things, I dunno what :/

Farseer, Warlock, Warp Spider

Also since 2.4.2 is out, and the tournament will be on 2.4.1. , will I be able to install the new patch and play on it, and then use the 2.4.1. installer to go back to the old patch for the tournament?

The tournament will be played on the most recent patch, 2.4.2 in this case.
It will be that way for all future tournaments as well until future notice.

Also, my updating of this thread got slightly delayed due to some rl business, but it's only a minor delay.

Let me know immediately what date you prefer! I'll be defaulting to Saturday unless the people tell me otherwise.
