Basic IG Lord General help

Hey guys, a new guy to the forums here. I feel I have afew flaws in my IG build which is:
Guardsmen (starting guardsmen)-Guardsmen-Sent maybe-tier up, varies, tier 3 Leman Russ

My main problems:
Do I focus on teching up too fast? The moment my gen nodes are active I try to max gen them.
Melee massacres (Especially early on). I find it hard to counter melee troops early on without a sentinel with stomp, and sometimes I tech up before I even get a sentinel.
I sometimes manage to lose very high value units, such as baneblades (a truly terrible loss) or Leman russes on occasion.

Possible problems:
I tend to favor Plasma gun guardsmen squads, and arming my LG with meltaguns and the Flak Jacket.
I also favor the Leman Russ Executioner.
It is hard to decide what to go for tier 1.5 purchase, but I usually go for Catachans or Spotter squad.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Are we talking about 1 v 1's or team games? In team games I have a player in my group who mains LC and he does very well when he is defending, less so when he is attacking.

His build order is similar to yours but he loves manticores, las turrets and heavy weapon turrets. He also loads up the grenade launchers on his LG so he can out shoot set up teams and dug in units.

Cats are the better of the two units in that they can disrupt melee squads, ranged squads and they can lay traps + have a melta gun. The spotters fill a similar role in disrupting ranged units, but they can't do anything against melee units or vehicles.

The LR Executionar is only good against infantry, so don't rush in and buy an upgrade for the LR. It is often best to keep the default weapon as it is good against both infantry and vehicles.

Try building las turrets instead of gens, unless teching up really fast is that important to you

It is hard to decide what to go for tier 1.5 purchase, but I usually go for Catachans or Spotter squad.

It never is for very cheap T1.5 options of IG. Combine different things (spotters + cats, cats + cats, hwt + hwt, spotters + hwt, etc). The amount of profit you extract from them is fully dependent on how you use them (and this comes strictly with practise).

Melee should never massacre IG early on. A firing line of 2x guardsmen and a sentinel (the standard thing we see) is more than sufficient to disallow anything melee-oriented to breach your ranks. Your hero has a ranged weapon. It becomes even ludicrously harder to ever use with success anything melee-oriented early on against such a firing line. And there is that multi-laser turret available for a very cheap price and can be salvaged later if doesn't prove useful anymore or is threatened and will be inevitably destroyed.

And when you say that you tech up before you even get sentinels (power free purchase) it makes me think that you play against AI (I don't mean ill will, I am really wondering how it is even possible to tech when you have no units but guardsmen).

And when you have a vehicle and very few squads to complement it you will most likely lose your vehicle. So get more useful units before purchasing any vehicle (not talking about specific cases when a early vehicle turns around a game). One game I managed to tech with just scouts and tactical marines and got a dreadnought right away, you think what? I lost that easily. But if I had devastators and assault marines it would be 2x/3x times harder for my opponent to bring down my walker.

I'm a pretty terrible IG player (terrible in general, actually), but my 0,02$ is that 2x GM + Sentinel is a base, not really a T1 build that you can get away with reliably. If you really want a power-free T1, at least get another GM or Sent, and most of the time you'll want/need a T1.5 unit of some sort.

This is a 3v3 perspective, right?

Many thanks for your replies, I am indeed playing against AI, but this is mostly because my Internet provider is a Limited Data thing. I am currently doing 1 v 1s and occasionally 2 v 2s offline practice. I will keep your tips in mind, however I'd like to ask your opinion on something.

When are situations that ACTUALLY demand a Ogryn? As far as I can tell there are only AFEW situations that demand ogryns.
Currently I favor getting Stormtroopers for T2, or just getting wargear. I suppose I should actually give a Chimera a try though.

Ogryns are great at defending your lines from melee units, they are also great flankers, good at initiating a fight and exerting pressure (no suppression in their face obv) and they can absorb a lot of fire.

Use them in conjunction with a Manticore and you will force off their setup teams while smacking them in the face with your Ogryns. Back them up with the rest of your shooty force and you have just won that engagement. They deal heavy melee damage so they are good against vehicles that don't have melee resistance or a lot of guns.

Their cost is high though so make sure you retreat fairly early to avoid taking expensive losses.

I see, thanks for the advice.
I want some more advice but it's abit more difficult to discern simply via text, could someone tell me how to attach replays? Cus I want to know wether I am messing certain things up on my games.

you should see an "attachments" tab under the submit button when you make a post, next to the "option" tab. from there you can attach your files
