Calling Judgement

So I've been playing a lot of games lately and have been getting slowly better. One thing though I still have trouble with is calling judgement. I always seem to retreat my units too early/late, engage poorly, flank poorly, and everything I seem to do is poorly. My micro isn't the best but it's around midranged or so. I know typical counters and such, but judging is something I apparently can't do.

This applies to 1v1,2v2,and 3v3.

Know when to engage, stay in the fight, or fall back is just something you'll learn as you play the game. However, it's easily lost if you stray away from game for an extensive period of time. You know to know what outcome is most favorable for you, for an ex.You might see an enemy push your generator, but you're in close position to genbash as well. Making the decision to retreat is sometimes not worth it, because you might just get back there to late, and even if you do end up going there, you might lose 1 or 2 generators in the process, and trying to re-value a 200 requisition in bleed can be difficult.

So in those situations, it's better off to trade generators. However, this is also sometimes you need to know how timing works, and paying attention to the army compositon your enemy has. For an ex. If you're getting genbashed by Chaos consisting of the tic(starting), csm (bought) tic(bought 2nd), you must be aware that there might be a 4th unit (Chaos Havoc etc for defensive-counter genbash) and knowing if there's any Aspiring Champion, Eternal War, or Wargears bought in general are all crucial information.

This is also, of course - very important to consider what is 'meta', if the 'meta' is say, going for a 4th unit (Raptor in this case, just for making a point). And you have good counter-melee units, you have nothing to be afraid of.

This may seem like an odd question but have you read this? http://www.dawnofwar.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=718
It is a very long but also very comprehensive guide from Codex on how to look at certain aspects of the game and how to judge situations.

Caeltos: When you say staying away from an extensive time, how long are we talking?

Adeptus: Yeah I've read that a few times. I mean, it gives great advice, but then again, some things in their are very situational and it's just confusing to a newer player at times.

Depends really on the game itself. It's a bad idea to mix different types of shooters for an ex. that have different pacing. Just like it's bad to mix different genres of RTS.

I can only speak from experience, but I know some friends of mine share the same unfortunate transitional errors. However, you can quickly regain some of those lost "skills" in relatively fast-pace.

As an ex. I daddle with too many variants of shooter games, and I had abit of a break from Counterstrike: Global Offensive, and made a return. I noticed that I'm playing alot more poorer in general awareness, my aim was off and the timings was also skewed. I've been out of the loop from the e-sport scene as well, and competetive scene influence the regular games as well, with strategies being incorporated into ranked games and so on and forth.

I would say a 3-day break is a maximum. When you exceed those days, you ought to invest time in watching at least games, chatting up with people and seeing what's going on, just so you're still in the loop and you won't be caught off-guard from new stuff, or the possible "meta" changes.
