Do we have a compilation thread about the sound bug?

So I recently started .... well attempted to get back into dow2 again for the new patch and have been running into the sound bug incessantly.
something like a 2000% increase in crashes due to the damn thing. 4 out of 5 matches end in epic fail on account of this bloody bug.
the only thing that has changed for me is upgrading to windows 10 ... from 7.

I dont think i need to tell anyone here that crashing 4 out 5 multiplayer matches is rather unhealthy.

What I have tried so far:

I have set the sound freq to the 44100 hz thing in game, but for my output devices if have options for 44100 in 16 bit and 24 bit and i have no clue which one of those is the right one too use if it even matters.

I have tried both and both lead to a crash to varying degrees. I have tried disabling all but one of the devices too.

I have tried running elite in compatibility mode for windows 7 and as an admin (oh lord does steam hate you if you do this). And i have inconsistent results.... (small sample size because its a pain in the ass to setup since you need to turn this on and off depending on which games you play (darkest dungeon crashes with this set up T-T)

I think 2 of my 4 finished games have come from this setup, but again 4 games is a tiny sample size.

Anyone have better luck with windows 10?

Also (im not looking for a direct answer but if we have like a faq on this rather common thing somewhere)

Haven't had a single sound-related crash.

Do you have a dedicated card? It could be an issue with the third-party vendor, especially if they don't have drivers particularly-suited for Win10 yet.

havent had a dedicated card in years, but ill double check my drivers, you would think by now they would have atleast something out

Do you get the crash specifically when running ELITE, or with vanilla as well? I don't know what additions ELITE provides, in terms of custom sound content (but I'd presume new units have some kind of voices hooked up).

I haven't noticed any / many audio-related crashes in DoW II since Relic's updates to it, so it's interesting to see one and one without a dedicated sound card.

I also got loads of these with Windows 10 and a host of other problems. DoW2 just seems to dislike Windows 10 on some configurations.

I've experienced it twice and figured out what was causing it both times to fix it. One was me having to turn off morphological filtering in the AMD control panel and the other was when I changed sound device while the game was open. Like plugging in my USB headset when I had my speakers hooked up to my motherboard. Had to close the game, plug in my headset, and then open it again. It happens in both retail and Elite and it's not just sound. The sound bug is some kind of generic error from what I've seen.

Never had the sound bug before... "upgrade" to Windows 10 and now I get them at irregular intervals.

Yeah Kami, my general advice would be to check any graphics control panel settings (or overrides, which for some reason are actually applied by default more often than not).

Beyond that I'm not sure, I haven't been affected by it myself. Any chance we could round up some warnings.txt collection for those who crash? Would be useful for Relic I think (though I think their Bugsplat reports do work these days, even with the URL redirect being iffy).

Back when I was having them I tried everything in CCC(Catalyst Control Center), including changing everything to not affect the game. I turned settings on and off until I narrowed it down solely to the morphological filtering option in CCC. Anyways, I don't have that problem anymore. It was on my old AMD 6950 and I have a Nvidia 970 now. I also don't have the USB headset anymore. Use a Sennheiser PC 350 SE headset and Corsair SP2500 speakers both plugged into a sound card with a splitter.

I'm still on win 7 for the obvious reason that i punish myself enough. I have had maybe 2 sound bugs in the entirety of playing dow2.

I've used various geforce cards, rarely the latest drivers, and onboard sound from my ASROCK mobo (of which i don't think i've every updated the chipset since i installed it). I use direct audio, not anything through USB

So ive narrowed it down a bit,

switching everything to 44100 hz (24 bit i think on my speakers) and 44100 hz in game
only having one sound device set (communication and output set as one device)
reducing number of sounds from 128 to 64

and then running steam as admin and in windows 7 compatibility mode has dramatically cut how many times i crash.

Also not tabbing out or having any open browser windows / full screen browser windows seem to have fixed gui issues.

thank god i have a backup laptop for that kind of crap
