2v2 strategies

Some people thought the way Fredbrik and I played was cheesy when we won the last 2v2 MRT. To those who don't remember Fredbrik played tech marine and I warboss. Fredbrik would construct a fast beacon that could support my 3x sluggas. Needles to say, it proved very powerful, and we were able to win every game with so little effort that some called it cheesy. Here is a link to the finals:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqKzeISfWGg

Cheesy or not, unlike all the other teams, Fredbrik and I had actually developed a strategy that the other teams' random non-cooperative gameplay simply couldn't compete with. Had the other teams made an effort too to develop their own 2v2 strategy, Fredbrik and I would probably have been less succesful.

There are many different and awesome 2v2 strategies that you can do. Just from the top of my head I can think of several cool strategies that might work very well.

Tyranid synapse strategy:

The idea here is simply to get all the available synapses to maximize the combat effectiveness of your combined armies. Imagine a combined tyranid army that is boosted by both improved synapse, basic synapse, damage synapse, melee synapse, ranged synapse, regeneration synapse and of course in late game the speed synapse from the swarmlord.

Ork waagh strategy:

Warboss and mekboy/knob. Lots of waagh banners and lots of sluggas and shootas. With the bosspole equipped and a huge waagh, that ork army would steamroll any opponent.

Chaos worship strategy:

Both players pick chaos. It's probably best with sorceress and plague champion. The idea is to get the benefit from each others worship. Worship affects allied chaos, so this is possible. I imagine that both players can set up camp near the center and then proceed to fend off enemies with havocs, grenade heretics and lots of aoe options. In t2 shrines should be built to further enhance each other.

Space marine tac spam strategy:

This strategy is probably the easiest to implement. Player 1 picks force commander with shield and player 2 pick apothecary and gets the aoe heal in t2. Both players get 2x tacs and a third from the drop pod. From there it's pretty straight forward. Just roam around the map with your extremely durable army and destroy anything in your path.

Mekboy and techmarine strategy:

This strategy is actually just a variant of what Fredbrik and I did. The t1 build is basically the same but in t2 both players builds walkers. The idea is to have lots of repair units to support the vehicles, and most importantly to support each other with the kult of speed and blessings of the omnissiah.

I haven't tested all of these strategies yet, so I can't say at this point that they are all viable. I can think of a few more strategies, and there are probably many more that no player yet has thought of. Because even though 2v2 and 3v3 is very popular, people rarely employ actual strategies. I hope that this post will make people think more about the concept of strategies in team games. Especially in 2v2 where tournaments are sometimes played. I think that a potential 2v2 tournament will be a lot more interesting to watch, if the teams shows up with actual 2v2 strategies. I at least will do a strategy next time MRT is in 2v2 format, and if your team doesn't have a strategy, then don't expect to beat me :P

Chaos worship does not affect allies. Other than that, nice post.

I tried this and was mocked and ridiculed for taking things too seriously. So I stopped. Good luck, I think there are some really awesome combos to be found in team games with players trying to collectively "find the broken"!

That is most definitely not correct. We should let Windu know. Imagine 3 Chaos with each worship benefitting each other. THAT would be truly OP.

Yeah, layered worship would be insane .

There are other options though, the sorcerers Warp is often used to save allied units. Very useful.

The Warp Rift accessory also seem to work with all the units on the field, friend or foe. Could be used in conjunction with Terminators, Ogryns, Knobs etc. The Summoning Circle thingy also reinforces, maybe this works for allies too?

Plague champions heal is also useful and I've seen a Nurgle shrine + Beacon or Medical Bunker be insanely effective. Maybe post some combos for races in the strategy section.

Warlock cloak of Shadows + tyranid spore mines to wipe out imperial guard armies :)

Lol that is just cruel aha.

How about the teleport armour for the Sorc, then teleport into almost any army and warp in somethingnasty. MoK Dred? LC Termies? Seer Council? or think even bigger...

Avatar or even GUO

Its a lot of red if your doing it often and it'll be on cooldown so once you've committed you better force everything off but omg, GUO teleported into an IG army? That's a lot of dead guardsmen.

Blessings of the Omnisiah + MoK dread. 50% reduction to damage while being repaired constantly. Or Mekboy buffs.

I'm a Chaos player soooooo...

CL's fireballs + Dark Flames? That's a lot of flame dps. Maybe even Chains of Torment to stick everything to the ground. I've personally enjoyed combinations of Chains plus Dark Flames + Curse of Tzneetch + Doombolts + Nukes etc. Pick and mix brah.

More Dakka on 2 x fully upgraded MoT CSM?

Gods help us.

You already have been practicing. Last night I literally walked in on you and Dirkradix playing 2v2, even though it was just retail.

Retail and Elite are different. I prefer retail though, but I'd rather practice Elite. So much random things.

I guess ”if ever” came before dow3. Also you are no longer the exception to the rule that no1 quits dow2 for good. :?

Very intresting,

I feel that a good idea would be to have timed teching rather than the haphazard teching we see in most tier 2 games. Essentially in a 2v2 scenario we could have two factions with one faction going heavy tier 1 to hold back the enemy while the other aims for a fast tier 2 this tiered teching would allow to combine the the advantages of both, perhaps an ORC SM pairing since orks favour the heavy T1 whilst SM are more at home with T2

Can't help it. There aren't many RTS that can cradle my lust or give me a sense of satisfaction when doing something awesome. Only Supreme Commander FA can do it, but my laptop can't run it. I will not play this game for a long time though. Just enough to scratch that itch :D
