I use a splitter for my audio jack on both my speakers and headphones. My speakers then have a power button where a light shows if it's on. I check it vigilantly to make sure that this never happens.

In all honesty that's far from the best moment. But there are a lot of anime that need to you watch the show to understand some funny parts. Like Steins Gate or SNAFU. You have to understand their character to get the most out of the joke.
In this anime Wakamoto the twisted and completely embarrassing character that she is make the moment fucking awesome. The english version/title of the anime is "No matter how i look at it it's you'alls fault that I am not popular."
Now the common knowledge of someone walking in onto you when you getting your thing on is great and funny. But the character makes is even better!! Because if you watch it again you can tell that the "female" voice in the sound file was her own. And she edited out the normal VA and but in her own monotone voice because she thought it was hot.
So again the moment is pretty funny, but when you know who the character is or the circonstance... way better lol.

Well, maybe this kind of humor just isn't for me and I really don't like the idea of having to watch everything to maybe get a joke.
Just take a look at basically anything from Monty Python or Blackadder and you can start laughing right from the get go. You don't have to watch whole "The quest for the holy grail" to find the bridge of death scene or the siege of the casle with the trojan rabbit.
