Do you have your Steam in a non-default area?

Well, it's installed on my D:/ instead of C:/ Would that make a difference somehow?

Iirc, yes. Make sure the installation path goes to the proper place. By default, it tries to go to C:/, which would make it do nothing since it's looking for something that is clearly not there.
