AI in Dow2 Multi player? Like Creeps in Wc3

One of the things I loved about wc3 was the inherent life in the game. Even before actually getting to your opponents base, you had *life forms* in between the map.

There were random occurrences that happened with the creeps, sometimes they would get friendly, and attack if you were nearby. Othertimes they would throw a rock if you get too close and it made for something else to do in between games.

Playing the game was not just a matter of running down to your opponents base and winning through harras. You could get creeps and experience and item yourself to success, a little like the leveling in wow before tougher environments, and taking new risks.

I was playing the dow2 campaign recently which is one of the most awesome campaigns ever and realized on some of the maps, the game was actually made to have *waves* of artificially controlled opponents run down set path ways.

I was playing to find out a Ravener attacked me out of no where, and from behind being randomly flanked by about 30 hormagaunts, with 20 terma gaunts infront . I had to fall back but I thought *Cool* this is more interesting. Waves of AI make the game interesting, especially when the waves vary.

Most importantly was the variation in the speed, strength and toughness of these *creep waves*. It keeps you constantly on your feet, your mind active. Now that was in a campaign map of dow2. We also know you can play cooperatively in campaign online.

We noticed the last stand was made as a kind of multi player addition to dow2, which whilst having some success, generally did not live up to something like the architectural design of HoN which copied Dota.

The last stand featured waves of opponents in a giant temple.
A pretty cool idea although it was not a Dota.

I am wondering if, some modders and artists out there could get together to actually create a Dota style mod or addition, or even progress on this type of game style. There seems to be so much potential in this idea because of new heroes being made.

Dota is a tried and tested formula and people enjoy playing in teams down their little lane. Its an interesting mix of a game because it also has an element of tower defense which is a very popular aspect, making it a kind of hybrid game.

Can you imagine:
Forces of Order vs Disorder, with streams of Chaos on one side and Space Marines on the other.

Or Space marines one side and Orks on the other. It would be SM, IG, Eldar vs Tyranid, Orks, Chaos with a ton of random heroes with different war-gears in between.

Looking at games like wc3 now, they are pretty much survived, and leave a legacy not because of the core game, but the little community made games like dota. At the same time, the formula of Dota has not changed much. There is much more to the actual design of this game that could be improved.

For example, the teams go onto a different map the next game, with different routes, challenges, and types of AI, with varying waves and currents. The standard dota map could be just Level 1.. and they go on to different levels. There could be a map with 5 lanes instead of the conventional 3, and so forth. Or the traditional 3 lanes with caves nearby which spawn other creeps that just interfere with everything.

Well, look forwards to hear your thoughts. As you know I think a 40k Dota is not only possible given the time, but would be a great project and the current skill sets and methods being used here are ready to take that kind of thing on.

Aside from eating up memory space, longer loads, coding stuff, and making sure the units stay still rather than go around capping stuff? I feel like this is too much work for to be implanted in the game though. And ELITE mod focuses on balancing the game not adding stuff for the lulz

A DoW2 MOBA mod was already made years ago, I posted the link in a similar thread before.

Thanks for the heads up!

Found it, an interesting thread and even found Caeltos poking around in there 6 years back with his spectacles!
http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread. ... of-Mightrs!

Unfortunately Miguel gave up on Dawn of Might.
He seemed to be making great progress although bug/detail solutions were probably not his individual strength points. He was making good accomplishments along the way however.

The main aspects like item recipes, being able to add new heroes, all that major stuff - was working,

The map looked quite fun

You really have thought this through.

I am sure it might be fun for some, but I really am not the MOBA type, I hate games like LOL and DOTA.

Creeps were "okay" in Warcraft 3 because they were designed to be included from the very start. There isn't room for them here, and adapting them to DOWII would change the entire gameplay dynamic significantly.

Pardon the belated reply.

Yea changing the dynamic is the point. Seeing a stompin Squiggoth or random AI stuff popping out in ever shifting waves is interesting.

Competitive/ranked isnt everyones cup of tea. This is quite an intensive game. There are pretzel gamers too.
