Questions/help

Postby ShowMeMagik » Thu 02 Jan, 2014 11:15 am

Hey guys I have a few questions on game play that would help me learn the game so if people can give me some of their thoughts it would be appreciated

Planning vs Reaction: Do you go into games with a game plan of what upgrades you want and what wargear to go for or do you tend to react to what happens in the game?

Spamming? I've noticed in retail more people seem to spam units (whereas videos in elite seem to show people with selection. What are peoples thoughts on spamming, is it effective or does it lead to easy counters?

Tactics in game modes: Do people have a general tactic for 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3's or do you play the same way in all modes?

Team game expectations: What are peoples expectations of team mates, should you stick to your lane where possible? or float between lanes? What would you expect your team mates to do.

Disclaimer: I don't really play Elite myself, I played quite a bit of retail and mostly just follow LulTube shoutcasts (especially 1v1s) and mod the game now.

To me it seems some 3x builds (triple DA, GM, Tic and Scout) are actually more common in Elite than they used to be in retail. Heavy T1 builds in general are also more popular now. Of course new/bad players have a tendency to spam a unit that seems powerful to them (like upgraded CSM) and beats other bad players that can't react properly.

As for planning, you can have a plan (which could be fairly exact for T1 and a bit more approximate for T2 onwards) but as you never know what the opponent will do -- what if they go for mass suppression or mass melee or vehicle heavy -- you must be prepared to adjust as well, it's "unlikely" you can have a cookie cutter plan that works vs. everything.

As for game modes, 1v1 is quite different as you must control more (all) of the map by yourself, and you really can't play it like team modes. 2v2 and 3v3 are less different, but you'll have to pull more weight in 2v2, whereas in 3v3 it may sometimes be possible to be a "floating" flank supporter and e.g. tech rush while your teammates invest more in early game.

1v1 is most about capping and map control, 3v3 is most about head-on collisions, and 2v2 is about halfway in between.

Laning and flanking depends on the map and situation, if you are the one on your team's resource lane you can't just wander off and lose all your power, but it doesn't mean you can never leave the lane -- you need to develop a sense of occasion and what's going on in the game. Sometimes you can flank. Sometimes it's important to seize the moment and push power. Sometimes you must abandon all else and focus everything between two VPs before the clock runs out.
