For those who like watching live streams

Postby PhatE » Mon 17 Feb, 2014 9:01 am

Hey there everyone,

For those who enjoy watching streams on a regular basis such as myself you'll probably be plagued by the bloatware that is flash. Some streams that run in very nice levels of 1080p tend to chew up a ton of processing power causing general system lag (even those with i7's).

There's a way around it where you can watch your streams in 1080p without needing to use flash. Instead you can watch it through VLC.

https://github.com/chrippa/livestreamer ... tag/v1.7.3

It's called livestreamer. If you decide to install it there's 1 command that's required. There are actually way more options if you just use the command 'livestreamer" so if you're curious about those then their help menu is great.

It's a tad outdated in terms of quality options but the command is "livestreamer URL [source] [high] [medium] [low] [mobile]"

So for example;

livestreamer http://www.twitch.tv/esltv_sc2 source

I might try this at home. Would really help me since my Flash has been acting up. Thanks!

The Twitch iPad app is pretty good at the moment (except no VOD support) and I expect Android version works equally well

Gave it a spin and it seemed to work. Keep in mind that so far it's only worked on streamers that are broadcasting live.

If I give it a specific archived twitch directory, would it play that even if it's not live?

I've only tried it on currently 'live' streams. Video play back might be all the more sweeter although since there are only two quality settings that being 480p and best might just have to do some trial and error but if I can get around the 1080p slideshow that happens with archived broadcasts I will be oh so very happy.

Confirmed it does work for past broacasts. You just need to properly write the url.
Doesn't seem to work with youtube so far. Recognizes the plugin but is missing the encoded stream map so I'm guessing it's not supported which is a shame.
