Given that I'm seeing quite a few posts in the forums of people requesting more units, more nods to the fluff, more this, that and the other of the 40k world... I thought it might be a good idea to dedicate a little thread here to the modding work of the dawn of war community for the first game, which to this day is still spitting out new work to bring the warhammer 40;000 universe to life.
If people are interested, I'll keep this space updated.
Unless otherwise specified, these mods are for Dawn of War: Soulstorm. It may be an inferior expansion to Dark Crusade, but it's still the most complete version and is thus used as the base for most modern mods.

I'll start off with the DowPro mod, which some might consider a spiritual progenitor of DOWII ELITE. In one of their latest patches, thanks to a long-standing arrangement years back from mod developers, this mod can use most of the Witch-hunter mod assets. For instance:

So you have a mod with similar principles to ELITE, featuring adepta sororitas miles better than any of the work relic/iron lore ever published.
I would highly recommend this mod to any fan of ELITE (which is why I'm mentioning it first): it's intelligently designed, and saw fit to borrow several aspects of DOWII gameplay where it was deemed that they could benefit the original game (eg, commander wargears, hard-counters are back, etc...).

Next; the tyranids mod for soulstorm.

For those too lazy too click on the link, the tl;dr is this:
-They have new modellers and may get new units. Perhaps 6th ed, perhaps not.
-They are adding more animations (including sync-kills)
-They are adding more FX
-They are consistently fixing bugs.
They have also instituted a 'global builder' system and added global abilities similar to dark eldar, or indeed DOWII. This is done to better simulate the role of the hive mind.

Another full-race mod: ultramarines. Yes, the ultrasmurfs. My will to mock the mod died around the time one of the modellers made a goddamn chaplain DREADNOUGHT.

The mod died at some point, but then a modeller named deathwatch78 rose to the task. So it's the latter pages in that thread that are of interest, particularly any of his posts.

The last one I'll mention in this post is a mod that brings many apocalypse units to DOW1. I'm mentioning it last because I happen to be on the dev team. This is the ultimate apocalypse mod, the theme music from which you might recognise from the ELITE main menu theme.
The mod does what it says on the tin; brings apocalypse scenarios to DOW1. Warhound and Reaver titans for the Imperium and Chaos, Revenant titans for the Eldar, stompas for the orks, mantas for tau, doomsday monoliths, gauss pylons and aeonic orbs for necrons, hierophants for the nids... and more to come in future patches. For instance, eldar are due to get their phantom titan in the next patch which should be out within a few weeks.
Non-titan apocalypse units to be enjoyed as well, of course, with eldar engines of vaul, imperial super-heavies such as the shadowsword and the stormhammer... you get the picture.
