MFW August Evaluation and Results

Postby Impregnable » Wed 17 Aug, 2016 4:47 am

In general, I am very satisfied with August MFW. Everything was organized and there were no major problems. 80% of the signed up people turned up on time in both dates and that made things real easy. Thank you everyone for the support. Now I am very confident in organizing this event every month.

Next Faction War will be at 18th and 19th of September due to my exam on 11th of September.

Results of matches are as follows. To be honest, this time's faction war turned into Orks vs Other factions special although I didn't mean it :P.

Day 1
SM vs Orks - 1 : 2
GK vs Orks - 1 : 2

Day 2
Chaos vs Orks - 3 : 0
Eldar vs Orks - 2 : 1

However, I saw some points to improve upon as I organized and done this event. Those points are as below.

1. Some reserve players never got to play for either date because of many reasons. (Sorry about that evilmario. It won't happen next time)
- Reasons were match ups they didn't sign up for, skill cap problem, better players showing up, team unbalances and especially not enough spots etc etc

2. People complained rules were too complex.
- Many people didn't read rules because they were too long and complex.

As I was watching the event, I came up with solutions for those problems and did some theory craft in terms of what are major concerns for this event.

Two major concerns for organizing MFW are 1. How to decide which match up to do and 2. How to deal with various number of people that turn up on the day.

Point system really nicely solved problem 1 this time. Combining point system and doing the least done match ups really made it easy to decide on which match up to do. First, calculate points and second, see whether the first highest point faction and second highest point faction had a match before. If answer is no, do the match up and if the answer is yes, compare second highest and third highest and so on. I can do 4 match ups in total 2 per a day so keeping the variety of match ups are of no concern. This way the problem was solved.

On the other hand, second problem about how to deal with extra signed up players who are left out was left in the dark this time. Since now I am getting a steady stream of players signing up, I felt it is time to device a new system to cope up with this problem as I have done for problem 1.

All in all, new changes to cope up with all of above concerns are as follows. These changes will be implemented for the next September Monthly Faction War.

1. Simplifying rules
- I found out why rules were too complex. It was because I never thought about concerns 1 and 2. With new changes, rules will become very easy to understand. Also I will add a link to the new page that shows how are procedures when you show up on the day.

2. Increase in number of matches
- A match for a single day will now consist of a single best of 5 and a single best of 3 instead of two best of 3. I calculated how many matches I could do for a single day and came up with on average of 8 matches per a day so will do it this way from now on.

3. Player management system
- This will be a flexible system that allows me to manage players who turn up on the day no matter how great or small the numbers are so that there is no one who signed up is left out without being able to play a game. It is as follows.

No Extra players / exactly 6 people present
- Signed up players will be organized as I have done before. In short, I will pick and balance by selecting 6 people who will participate in the main match.

In case of lacking players / less than 6 players for the match up
- If there are too little people who shows up and there are lack of players, I will get a recommendation from an expert player or will call up from my friend list.

Extra players up to 3
- People who turn up on the day without signing up or are for some reasons cannot participate in the main match will have so called Faction War challenge matches with single games instead of best of 3 or 5.
- 3 left out players will team up and decide on which faction to represent. After that they will take on any team that gets into the room. Requirement will be more than 1000hrs logged into DOW2. Those 3 who enter must decide on a faction to represent as well. They will have single match on the map out of the map pool. The defending faction will decide on which map to do out of the map pool. When there are only 1 or 2 reserve players instead of 3, I will call up on my friend list to make a defending faction team.
- If game lasts more than 30 minutes or challengers win the match, the game will be allowed to be casted.

More than 4 extra players up to 6
- I will fill up missing number of players by recommendation and by calling up from my friend list and do a proper match up. Match up will be decided by points as usual.

More than 13 people present
- I don't think this will be likely but 1 or more extra people will have to do Faction War challenge while the other 12 have 2 match ups at the same time.

I have an extra steam id I burrowed from my friend so will be able to observe two rooms at a time.

4. Deciding Position
- It seemed like the team who picks positions first is at a disadvantage in a match up because the team who picks later can match players to counter. So I decided to make a losing team to pick later instead of earlier in the next event as opposite of last event.

It hoenstly barely matters and is a gigantic waste of time, go with random.

Ok. I guess having more matches by saving time is better. Since I am turning the first best of 3 into best of 5, I will remove that part then to save up time. Thanks for your opinion. If there is anything else to suggest, please do so.
