Having not really played much Imperial Guard during my DoW2 life, I'm finding that now that I'm really trying to play them - it's such an uphill battle, and I've yet to have much fun as it stands.
Does anyone have any generalist tips? I get the idea of the Guard, but I'm finding it hard to counter other races a lot.
An example is a game I've just played.
My build: Inquisitor - GM - Sent - GM - Cats - Infiltrate Armour - T2
Their build: Techmarine - Scouts - Tacs - Tacs - Devs - T2 - T3.
He managed to skip to T3 because I was just having a terrible time trying to do anything to his force, never mind retain map control.

Re: IG Tips
Don't buy catachans if you want to win, they're shit. Yo
Get spotters instead and forgo the infiltration armour until t2 when you get ogryns. You also probably want the holy brazier+rosarius on your Inq and possibly a HWT after all that since he had the 2x tacs+tm.

Spotter would have helped you tremendously in that specific case.
Toilailee wrote:In a nutshell the way you overcome this is by improving your sentinel play. Focus especially on the guardsmen & sentinel synergy in t1, mastering that is basically the key to all 1v1 ig play. When you get the hang of it you can shut down any non hero melee units in the game without extra investments in anti melee.
2gm & 1 sent can take apart any t1 force of equal squad count, barring stuff like double set up teams or double asms etc.
After that you move to double sentinel play, and when you get that down you'll find yourself winning most of your games before the 8 minute mark (altho sents did get hit by nerfbat pretty hard on the elite mod and aren't as bonkers trololo as they used to be, 2 sents is still very viable).
Also don't underestimate plasma guns. I remember I had trouble finding a reliable damage source vs asms other than ogryns cos I didn't use plasmas. When you actually manage to get your plasma gm to take some potshots at hi units, you will actually hurt them instead of tickling them with lasguns.
With gm squads that have plasmas + commissar its particularly easy to bait the jump (altho with teleport its harder than with jump) and insta retreat, then execute within weapons range and start shooting.
Re: IG Tips
I mainly got the infiltration armour because it let Catachans run face-first at the Dev team, which ended up being wiped (and replaced by another + scout sarge babysit from then on, but alas).
I mainly have a map control problem. I can eventually (after a lot of struggling...) tell TM + Double Tacs to go f*** themselves (in a polite, I'm-shooting-at-you-so-please-go-away kind of fashion), but by then, Scouts have been having a whale of a time capping EVERYTHING.
I don't feel secure in spreading out my Guardsmen too often, but at the same time I'm getting myself nowhere by sticking together too much.
I just don't know how to find a good middle ground. Any map control advice?

change your build to include a heavy weapons team. Scouts, tacs, and techmarine are all easily controlled by it.
Force him into getting ASM, then stomp him with sentinel when he jumps you, and troll away with catachan/commie lord/inquisitor melee attacks while your guardsmen shine their flashlights at the ASM and try to cause damage.

In the US "yo" is a slang form of address and pretty much follows no grammar conventions. But putting it at the end of the sentence is very common and implies nothing
