My improved targeter (WSE) dilemma

Postby Lichtbringer » Mon 31 Mar, 2014 5:56 pm

So I have a problem :D

If you want to increase the ranged damage of the WSE you can buy
the improved targeters (50% bonusdamage + 7 bonus range 100req 30power) T1
+
either the Heavy Gauge Deathspinner (100req 25power, 34,09 damage per second, aka 40% increase and the awesome ability to almost infinitly knockdown singletargets.)
in T1
or
the Entangling Web (120 req 30 power, same damage as the Heavy Gauge, and the awesome ability to immobilize an enemy unit for 7 seconds (prime target for nades)). in T2.

Btw, the Improved targeters look kinda expensiv, when you get the same damage from the Heavygauge deathspinner, or do you think 5 more power is balanced because it gives him more range, instead of an almost op ability (which you can now retreat from, but before o_O).

But to get back on topic: If I get improved targeters, it seems stupid not to buy the heavy gauge deathspinner in addition because the damage stacks (if not, ignore this whole post). But sometimes I would rather get the Entangling web in T2.
But if I already bought the T1 weopon (which is really good) I always think the additional investment for entangling Web seems wasted.
On the other hand if I have the Improved targeters I don't wanna buy nothing and wait for T2 because I would miss out on the DPS synergy.

Also the Improved targeters seem to lock me out of the Claws because the ranged damage increase seems wasted.

But without the Improved targeters the WSEs DPS seems too be pretty low )=

So I guess my question is: Any thoughts on this? How do you handle the "Situation"?^^ I thought about some Solutions, but maybe others feel its still worth to get only the improved targeters in T1? or to replace the Deathspinner when Entangling web gets unlocked? Or to get the Improved targeters early game, and the Claws lategame?

If not, what would you think about a bonus for Claws+Improved targeters? (I have no clue what that could be, maybe just raw 25% damage, or something creative?)
My dream for the Entangling web would be, that I could buy it already in T1, and profite from the increased damage, while the ability gets unlocked in T2^^

WSE has other tricks than Improved Targeter
You don't have to go for range DPS synergy with WSE wargears. His wargears are perfect for nade combos, and the deathspinner alone does a lot of work, especially paired with the T2 armor. Don't feel obliged to get improved targeter every game.

Powerblades + Improved Targeter
You also mentioned powerblades+improved targeters, but the powerblades do not affect ranged DPS, so in that regard, improved targeter still works fine. Besides, powerblades are on the cheap side for a commander heavy-melee weapon, so switching weapons shouldn't be too much of a hassle on your eco.

Is Improved Targeter Worth It?
Sometimes. Especially (and obviously) against light infantry. The payout of this wargear is extremely dependent on your playstyle. Whenever I get the wargear, my goal is to lvl the WSE fast, and I usually have him capping points, because he can beat just about capping squad while getting EXP. In this sense, this wargear sees limited performance output in team games.

That said, this wargear is usually VERY low on my priority. Eldar early game is extremely power dependent. To make the most out of this wargear, you need rangers to provide sight, so that comes out to 30 (+10 pathfinder) power for rangers + 30 power for improved targeters. You usually can't afford this kind of luxury in the early game as Eldar - rather, you have to get aspects, shuri, so forth. As you've also mentioned, deathspinner basically boosts his DPS already for a cheaper price AND gives an amazing ability.

For 30 power, this wargear is not game-changing. It helps the capping battle a good bit, but with good awareness, WSE can always win the capping battle anyways. Furthermore, the synergy WSE can have with other squads is boosted significantly with other wargears, but not with improved targeters. All in all, this wargear is never a part of my core WSE build. Rather, it's a wargear I get while going to T2, or if I have a significant advantage in T1 and want to pressure it.

Improved targetters is a "soldier of fortune" kind of wargear imo. It's never a bad purchase, but it is also never a necessary purchase. If you can squeeze it in, buy it. If you can't, then don't. That's my rule for it, plain and simple.

Peculiar at 30 power, does not have good synergy with ranger builds as a consequence. Therefore you are more vulnerable to infiltration as Eldar must invest power into all T1 squads. Against non-Knob Orks or IG you have a case for it, very possibly vs PC too and occasionally Apo if you are ahead on power.

Shimmer Orb and Grav Grenade are both much better and compete for the same slot. Only wargear worth it (unless playing trololol group teleport) in T1 is HG Deathspinner.

He's not a damage dealer and you risk trying to make him one by using this and feeling obliged to shoot as much as possible. Don't. Harass and always fight from cover, like before.

On topic Powerblades are overpriced, 130/40 is almost never worth it with the Eldar T2 being one of (the?) most heavy power-wise in the game. You have better AV. Only case would be vs a very troublesome lascannon or plasma cannon o.e., even then autarch if possible and leave the WSE to support and harassment roles.

I disagree, powerblades does a lot to negate transport play and makes the WSE an incalculably annoying threat in the capping war.

I agree with this though I also think they are a really important part of the WSE leveling, especially vs chaos/ig/nids/orks, you can cause alot of damage and gain levels quickly with them, also you get something crazy like 50 or more dps at level 1 with his web wargear (the t2 wep) and the targeters + the amazing range.

You also get the roughly 51dps of damage with the T1 Lulspinner upgrade + Targetters. Both his ranged weapon upgrades increase his base dps from 24 to 34.

As said before it's only 30 power. You rather have it cost 150-200/50 like most heavy melee weapons that are on non-ranged non-teleporting heroes? -.-
