The World Builder :/

So I have read some guides on this, looked around a bit, got some tips from those in the know, but I cannot get my head around it. The tools all seem very confusing to me, but the worst problem I have is not covered by any guide: how to start off. It is nice of them to tell me how to balance and all, but I have no idea what to do to start off. It launches me with nothing so when I add a tile it becomes an ever expanding circle depending on your scroll distance, so I tried inserting a marker to mark playable area, but now I have a tiled section and and a red square marking area out. I have no idea how to start, the guides assume you already know how to get the right shape, correct heights, how to effectively manage it. I know that other people have had this stuff and learned from it all, but I am lost in the darkness of World Builder.exe.

Please help me :/

Turn off fog (right side of the toolbar has the visibility buttons) so you can see everything and not the giant circle of visibility.

No guide tells how to start because there is no right way to do it. Everyone does it differently. Some make drawings and pre-plan everything, some start off by creating an external height map, some start by deciding on point layout, so on and so on.

Some will build the basic structure of the entire map and then begin adding details, others will completely flesh out an area before moving on.

Start in whatever way you feel comfortable.

Thanks Indrid, but I don't really understand the tools or how to make them work.

MaxPower did a stream of some world building, maybe that could help? I think he also has another video on his youtube channel.

swift I could guide u through the starting phase of the world builder, would prolly do a stream and you could ask me how to do certain things with the world builder - once I have some time to actually do so, could also work a bit more on my 2on2 map...bah not enough time to do everything that needs to be done -.-

I assume you've read London Duncan's guide? His is the best I've seen in written form. For a video guide, Grizzzzzzzzzzz's is pretty good.

FWIW, your first map will probably be a clusterfuck because there are some elements that are best pre-planned that are difficult and/or arduous to change after you've started editing the map. Be prepared, roll with it, and apply that knowledge to your next map. 8-)

Thanks for the replys, and yes I have seen London Duncan's guide which helps a lot, but my problem is it assumes you already know the basics.

That would be really helpful and I have a lot of time on my hands at the moment so just about any time works for me. :)

I'm having trouble understanding exactly what the problem is. Duncan's guide doesn't assume you know the basics - I'd never used the WB before reading it.

I don't really understand the tools or how to make them work.

This is very vague. You mean you don't understand a single thing? You can't paint tiles or raise/lower terrain? You can't place objects? These things are really not that hard and should be self-explanatory, especially with a guide. The program also has context-sensitive instructions in the bottom left.
